[Thread] 1/ I analysed about 31,000 tweets from around 16000 unique Twitter accounts using the "plandemic" hashtag. The sample was mostly taken between 7th and 9th May. The results are fascinating, although perhaps in some cases unsurprising. #disinformation #Covid_19
/ The most salient and cohesive community tweeting on the hashtag are pro-Trump or conspiracy identifying accounts. If you examine their bios, MAGA, Trump, WWG1WGA, KAG, Qanon are the most common terms. Around 33% of all accounts with a biography contained one of these terms
/ This has been true for those spreading 5g and Corona conspiracies too. The below graph shows some of the main Twitter accounts using the hashtag either being retweeted or replied to. (Note, this is mostly pro-conspiracy accounts, but debunkers too- such as @tarahaelle )
/ However, the most interesting aspect is the seemingly coordinated and intense promotion of this conspiracy by select communities of mostly pro-Trump, anti-globalist conspiracy networks. If you look at the network graph below, look at the communities circled in red. #Covid_19
/ These communities show high engagement within each other, but not necessarily the rest of those promoting the conspiracies. They are insular, but also behaviourally different. Whereas most of the network retweet, these accounts furiously reply to each other #Covid_19
/ Within this sample, the account using the hashtag the most is a man reported to live in England who also seems to be a Trump fan and a Qanoner. Kind of bizarre. Not sure why a British pro-Trumper is so involved...
/ This sexy network graph coloured by verified (blue) and non-verified accounts shows a northern cluster of verified accounts centred around @realDonaldTrump . Also a nice rogue cluster around @SebGorka . Makes sense, given the right-dominated nature of this dis/mis/information
/ Turns out of verified accounts tweet the conspiracy too. A republican candidate (former candidate) for congress @votenickmoutos has been spreading the conspiracy too. Remember when republican candidate Joanne Wright also spread #Covid_19 conspiracies? I sense a pattern
