First, as of late April, we found substantial variation across states in % of pts with missing race/ethnicity data. *Reporting race/ethnicity is not a simple yes/no* Quality matters, and it needs work. 2/n
Even among states that do report #covid mortality across race/ethnic groups, a large source of bias is often ignored: Black and particularly Latinx population skews younger than white. Check out data, via @uscensusbureau Census: bit.ly/2yY9S8V #disparities 3/n
Given the strong relation between age and #COVID2019 mortality, adjusting for age dramatically changes the magnitude of disparities. NYS is one of the few states that presents such data: Check out crude vs. age-adjusted disparities. on.ny.gov/2LjUx5h 4/n
We estimated standardized mortality by race/ethnicity, accounting for age: **Preliminary, findings: Substantial variation across states in disparities. Summary estimate: 3.5-fold higher in Black than white pop’n. @thehowie bit.ly/2T6vcQv 5/n
Similarly, Latinx nearly 2-fold higher #COVID2019 related pop’n mortality than white pop’n overall, with lots of variability across states. 6/n
