Why have active cigarette smokers been consistently shown to have relative protection from #COVID19?
A new paper @Dev_Cell shows a substantial increase of ACE2 expression that is dose-dependent, by @JSheltzer @CSHL @joans @Google and colleagues

Some have questioned my assertion of cigarette smoking offering relative protection
There are several references, but here is the latest @TheLancet and many more like this

Let me add I’d be the last person in the world to support cigarettes or find anything that supports their use. There’s a paradox here with the new @Dev_cell paper. Others have suggested nicotine interactions. A lot more to learn on this topic
Multiple responses, w/ various links/papers, suggest the risk of getting #COVID19 reduced (protection from) but when active smokers do get infected their outcomes are significantly worse. Mechanism for the former is unknown. The new paper sheds some light on the latter.
