The present temple structure was built some 300 years back only .But the original temple said to be along the seashore about a mile away and was destroyed and demolished by the Portuguese

Ancient hym -Poompavai pathikam, says the temple was built in the 7th century BC by the Pallava dynasty. Later parts of the old structure remains used while constructing the present #Kapaleeswarar temple complex with beautiful sculptures

#Kapaleeswarar Temple - Brahma took pride of his creative powers & showed off giving no respect to Shiva. To teach Brahma respect ,Shiva plucked one of Brahma 5 heads & deprived him of creative powers. Brahma realized his mistake, did penance here to seek forgiveness frm Shiva.

#Kapaleeswarar Temple -Parvati asked Shiva to teach her the meaning of “Na Ma Si Va Ya”.Shiva agreed ,while teaching Parvati saw a peahen & lost her attention. Shiva cursed Parvati to take the form of a peahen.Goddess Parvati in her peacock form worshipped Shiva in this temple.

#Kapaleeswarar Temple - Shiva is worshiped as Kapaleeswarar -kapala means -head ,Eewara - Shiva .Parvati is worshipped as Karpagambal .Inscriptions dating back to 12th century are found inside the temple.#Chennai
