Organizer says a Raleigh cop came up and spoke with them earlier, very politely. If only every interaction was like that, she said, they wouldn’t be out here marching #ncpol #RaleighProtests
March starting. I count about 150 protesters. After this video, they’re now making their way up McDowell Street with a police escort #ncpol #RaleighProtests
Marchers stop outside the #NCGA building to chant “black lives matter” and “this is what democracy looks like” and other chants #ncpol #raleighncprotests #RaleighDemandsJustice
“Good cops quit. Walk off and join us!”—I haven’t heard of anything like this happening in NC but if I missed it, someone let me know #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice #raleighncprotests
Construction workers taking a break (it’s a very hot day today) to film the march
At the governor’s mansion. Unclear if he’s in the building but there are a lot of State Troopers inside the walls #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice #RaleighProtest
Jamaal Lutes told me he’s marching for his friend Akiel Denkins, who he watched Raleigh police kill in 2016

The shooting was ruled justified as self defense, but Lutes said that isn’t what happened

“They killed an innocent man because he was running. I seen it.” #RaleighProtest
Protesters now engaging in 9 minutes of silence in honor of #GeorgeFloyd. Still outside the governors mansion #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
A bunch of protesters jumped the temporary security fence earlier. Police came over and most left, although a few protest leaders stayed behind. No arrests at this point, although an officer is telling them to get back #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice #RaleighProtests
There are 7-8 protesters still past the fence, plus this white guy kneeling in front of them with his fist raised. I asked if he was going to move if the cops started arresting people. He nodded to the others and said “I’m staying here for as long as they do” #ncpol #raleigh
Protesters have been chanting at the governor’s mansion for 2.5 hours now, calling for Roy Cooper to come talk to them. Getting a little impatient, with protest leader Taari Coleman calling him a “coward” and leading the crowd in this chant #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
Not long til curfew and I have never seen downtown Raleigh so deserted. Everything boarded up, less than a dozen cars parked on the street and I saw maybe 30 people, 25 of whom were cops guarding the courthouse
In Nash Square though it’s a totally different scene. Several hundred protesters who had been at the governor’s mansion earlier are now assembled here #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
Things breaking up now. Another protest at the governor’s mansion planned tomorrow, organizer say. In the meantime Childish Gambino is playing everybody out #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice #RaleighProtest
And the dance party continues
The protest leader, who is black, is urging people to go home and not break curfew, meanwhile a white guy in a bitcoin T-shirt is urging them to break curfew like people have the last few nights. Interesting dynamic here. #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
Few dozen still downtown, about 15 minutes post-curfew. Haven’t seen any arrests yet although a car is going around with a speaker telling people they’ll be arrested if they don’t leave #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
Meanwhile here’s @vizjourno talking to 11-year-old Camila, who was helping Centro owner Angela Salamanca (in pink) paint a mural for #georgefloyd on the plywood covering their broken windows in downtown #ncpol #RaleighProtest #RaleighDemandsJustice
Two different, uh, perspectives on the curfew that began 40 minutes ago (nsfw) #ncpol #raleighprotests #RaleighDemandsJustice
Protesters march past the courthouse, with a bunch of cops on the corner, chanting “Hands up don’t shoot” #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice #RaleighProtest
Somebody got arrested. I didn’t see it go down but a bunch of protesters started cheering, and two told me it was a guy who had been following them yelling at them to go home. #ncpol #RaleighProtests #RaleighDemandsJustice
Raleigh Police Chief is meeting with the protesters who are still out an hour past curfew. One young black man in the crowd tells her “You’ve already done a lot more than any other cop. You’re listening to us.” #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice #RaleighProtests
“We’re not trying to go to jail,” he says. “We want justice.”

Another protester appeals to the chief, who is a black woman. Asks if her parents marched in the 60s, and tells her last night her officers were only stopping black people for violating curfew #ncpol #RaleighProtest
Protesters ask her if she’s going to march with them Friday. But she’s been talking very quietly this whole time. Haven’t heard any of her responses unfortunately. #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
Hard to explain how nonexistent social distancing is right now. Several circles of people standing should to shoulder around the chief. Got a brief window for this photo though #ncpol #RaleighDemandsJustice
Update from the Sheriff's Office, 1 arrest as of 10 pm: Nicholas Barker of Cape Carteret, about 2.5 hours away. I believe he's the man whose arrest protesters cheered. Not charged with violating curfew, but 2 charges related to not moving his motorcycle when police told him to
