Thread: And I'm still not done with AT&T/Warner Media/HBO Max.

Here's a thread with my advice for Warner Media and where they should go from here with #HBOMax $T
Why Warner Media? Well, day-to-day, they’re really the folks running a streaming platform. All the partnerships and promotions run by AT&T are nice, but the content/product folks are responsible for making HBO Max succeed.
Step 1: Hold the line on Amazon for Prime Channels distribution and providing content for IMDb TV.

You read my column. You know why. Stay strong.

Sub-step a: Help out Prime customers with messaging and targeted ads where possible. Offer discounts (where legal) to come to HBO Max via other methods.

Express knowledge you feel their pain.

Add value.
You’re likely learning this is hard since Amazon owns the customer relationship ie email/billing. Hence why you need to hold the line.
Step 2: Hold line on Roku for Roku Channels, but entice them to get a deal done. You need their distribution in the US.
Alt Step 2: Buy Roku? I get it, you have $150 billion in debt. Roku is market cap $13 billion. So call it $15-20 billion to get a deal done.

Can you afford this? No. Can you afford not to? Maybe no as well.
(Will this happen? No. AT&T is cashed out. But given that they need a device with penetration in homes, it would help across the board. Yes, Trump admin would try to stop it.)
Step 3: Develop big broad comedies. In other words, get Chuck Lorre to make more TV shows exclusively for HBO Max, not CBS. And don’t worry if they aren’t prestige, that’s what you want.

Customers have enough prestige-y/peak TV content.
I see three types of content in TV: prestige/peak, mainstream/broad and unscripted reality.

You have the first category, but need the second.
Step 4: Promote the “Max” not the “HBO” part of the bundle. The HBO folks need to be convinced to switch to this platform, not new subs convinced that HBO is worth it. They already know.
Step 5: Fix the DC section. I’m not sure how much it will cost, but right now it’s both lacking of content and lacking the right content. Justice League Unlimited? Nope. DC Animated films? Nope. The vast majority of the CW shows? Stuck on Netflix.
This won’t be easy or cheap, but it would help.

That’s for now.
