The importance of curriculum design is even more obvious during these times when racial hatred is dividing the world before our eyes. Our curriculum promotes #BlackHistory 12 months of the year and provides pupils with the language, knowledge and confidence to challenge racism.
#BlackHistory is bigger than slavery. We teach our children accordingly. To give our pupils a chance of living in a more equitable society, we have to change the way we teach them and what we teach them. This thread highlights some of the content of our curriculum.
In English we read texts that teach our pupils #BlackLivesMatter, including powerful texts by @jewell_p_rhodes, Beverly Naidoo and @EMRLaird.
In history we learn about the lives of Mary Seacole, Ruby Bridges and Nelson Mandela.
We learn that WW1 was not a European war and about the contribution of the West Indies Regiment, of over 1 million Indian soldiers (including Pakistan and Bangladesh) and of the sacrifice made by the continent of Africa (which is not a country by the way!)
When learning about a significant event in British history post 1066, we study the impact of the Windrush Generation on the shaping of Birmingham and Britain.
We learn about the history of Africa, including the great sub-saharan kingdoms of Ghana, Songhai, Great Zimbabwe and Mali. Of the great African leaders, including Mansa Musa, Hanibal Barca and Askia Muhammad. We know all about the scramble for Africa and European imperialism.
In geography we know that Africa is not a country. We learn about the rich and varied cultures, faiths and societies from across this vast, historic continent.
Above all else, our curriculum is designed to teach our children about black culture and history and about racism. As a wise man once said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
#BlackLivesMatter all of the time and #BlackHistory is more than one month. #WeAreHarperBell and this is our curriculum.
