Freedom of Information laws are necessary to keep governments accountable. They’re a cornerstone of democracy. But the UCP is breaking its own laws by refusing to release documents about this noxious union-busting “information line.” #ableg #abpoli #canlab thestar.com/edmonton/2019/…
This program, designed to discourage Albertans from exercising their constitutional right to organize, was launched more 8 months ago. We submitted an Freedom of Information request on Oct. 23, 2019. On Dec. 19, we were told that 255 pages of documents would be released to us.
On Jan. 27, 2020, we were told the documents had to be “signed off.” In other words, they were sitting on the Labour Minister’s desk awaiting his approval.
The documents have been awaiting approval for release by the minister for nearly 6 months. This is a clear violation of the Alberta’s Freedom of Information legislation. And they can’t blame it on COVID-19. The documents should have been released before the pandemic.
All of this is significant because the UCP is in the cusp of introducing a package of bills aimed at undermining workers’ rights and weakening unions. We think those documents will shed light on the truth about the UCP’s anti-worker animus.
Today, I’m demanding that labour minister @JasonCoppingAB stop breaking the law. I’m also calling on Jill Clayton, Alberta’s Information and Privacy Commissioner (@ABoipc) to enforce the law. This needs to be seen for what it is: an affront to democracy. #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli
The UCP used the emergency powers they granted themselves during the COVID crisis to change the rules, without debate. That’s questionable, at best. But it should NOT be used as an excuse to withhold documents they should’ve released BEFORE the crisis.
