“Foreplay” will be my brief intro to the Come album before we move on to cover the individual tracks.

“This is the Dawning of a New Spiritual Revolution”.

☝️ is the phrase that underpins the Come album.

Piano & Mic 83’ was not Prince’s first “Posthumous” album, it was “Come”.
There was a lot going on in P world in the 90’s & to help you w/ the complex background I would highly recommend watching this brilliant documentary:

Also my abridged notes chronicle the “Come Album Timeline” - covering the different configurations👇
Prince ended the 80’s on a commercial high with Batman, a huge success after Lovesexy.

The 1st album of the 90’s was Graffiti Bridge. The movie wasn’t great & the double album would have been far superior as a single release.

The movie & album were not an overwhelming success.
In 1991 P released Diamonds & Pearls which was a big commercial success.

Symbol was released in 1992 & was met with a mixed reception. Some loved it all, some didn’t. Some said it was following trends rather than setting them which was what P usually did.

Sales were falling.
Also in 1992, he had signed the biggest music deal in history with WB for (a mythical) $100 Million - a 5 album deal (see documentary ☝️)

Expectations were now sky high.

In 1993, within a year of this news, there were reports that he had retired from making music - confusion.
A month later he was changing his name from Prince to Symbol - greater confusion!

And then he was going to release different projects under different names - highpoint of confusion.

An ever changing situation & you couldn’t keep up ‘in real time’.

No FB/T/IG in those days.
I had religiously followed everything Prince did from 82 to 91 but amidst this confusion, it was all beginning to take its toll.

For me 1st & foremost — the music.

His personal life, politics, what he wore & who he was dating were secondary & of less importance.

Just music!
During this time, there were changes in my own life - just married, maturing, children & start of my legal career.

So my priorities had changed.

My musical tastes were changing too, I was developing a deeper interest in Jazz & music from South America, Africa & Arabia.
I took time out from P world, my patience was waning, I had other priorities & a world of music to explore.

But hindsight is wonderful — I revisited the 90’s period some years later with a greater interest & enthusiasm & ‘then’ things really started to make much more sense.
Post-real time - I love a lot about this period & it beholds a richness & depth that one can easily underestimate, overlook or dismiss if time isn’t taken to fully explore it.

Ignore what the critics & general public say about this period & be guided by your own judgements.
90’s was a time when P was in the throes of one of the biggest battles of his life — that with WB for artistic control of his intellectual Property & to reclaim his identity.

"the most spectacular slow-motion career derailment in the history of popular music." - Rolling Stone
This was one of the unhappiest times of his career. He was frustrated, he felt enslaved by WB, critics were against him too & his stature as a big artist was rapidly diminishing.

‘In real time’, he was losing some relevancy too & it hurt!
90’s — he was releasing music in 3 different ways: (👇- signifies see notes)

1. As Symbol which represented his new spiritual rejuvenation — his 3rd rejuvenation after Purple Rain & Lovesexy.

As Symbol, his releases would consist of his new & superior material.
2. As NPG — which reflected his band output.

3. As Prince — for WB he would release previously recorded music in the Vault to see out his 5 album deal.

After the name change, Come was the first ‘new’ “Prince” release in 1994.

Read Mayte’s letter to👇Controversy Fanzine
Come was hardly promoted by WB.

I only found out about it after stumbling upon a copy at a ‘wrecka stow’.

My initial thought was ‘is it an archival release’ because I was out of the P loop & had not heard anything about a new release.

The cover & tracklist were a giveaway.
It was new. I took it home & listened to it. It was the best thing I had heard from him since Lovesexy & the most interesting since The Black Album 87’ bootleg.

I couldn’t understand why it had not been promoted & remained so obscure.

It wasn’t sub-standard vault material.
The fight between WB & Prince/Symbol leading up to Come’s release wasn’t pretty & it was being aired in public.

WB ran an ad belittling his name change.

Prince/Symbol hit back with his own ad - alluding to disrespect.
Come was his worst selling album since 1980’s Dirty Mind even tho’ it hit No.1 in the English album charts.

He was never going to meet the sales target — 5 million units per album — that WB had set to free him from repaying the $10M per album advance.

Hence he was a “Slave”!
Under 50 minutes — Come is P’s shortest album since Batman.

The songs are all one word titles.

It was his 3rd & final album to adorn a B&W cover after Dirty Mind & Parade.

On the album cover, he is captured in front of not 1 but 2 famous Cathedrals w/ I will cover later on.
Also on the cover the dates “1958–1993” are below Prince’s name signifying his death.

The mirror message on the album’s inner sleeve states:

“This is the Dawning of a New Spiritual Revolution”

He spoke about this in Q Mag:👇
So Prince is dead & it’s the dawning of a new spiritual revolution.

His dispute with WB was more about emancipation & seizing control of his artistry rather than about $$$.

At shows as Symbol, he frequently called out Prince is dead! much to the bewilderment of the audiences.
P was dead but death was not mentioned on Come in the same way it had been on previous albums/songs.

Previously death was mentioned in celebratory tones as Prince was looking forward to the Dawn.

This idea is more fully explored in my PR thread here:

On Come P mentions death on the following songs & in the following ways:

Papa - death by suicide.

Race - we’re all the same when dead

On Dark - he’s an innocent man on death row

Letitgo - Prince says he would be better off dead than living for anyone else if not for himself
On Come, death is not mentioned in a celebratory way because P is already dead.

This is the start of a New Spiritual Revolution as indicated on the inside sleeve.

Prince is no longer looking forward to the Dawn.

He is now in the midst of the Dawn and reborn as Symbol.
All these implications lead to Come being the last ever WB album of ‘new material’ to be released by the ‘now dead’ “Prince”.

Hence why I have called it his 1st posthumous release.

4 more albums were owed to WB but those were going to be comprised of music from his vault.
Come is without doubt dark & brooding & it’s great but it’s also unfairly underrated.

Prince had indicated that he didn’t care how the album commercially fared.

This was evident from the cover w/ used previously published photos from Gydesen’s “The Sacrifice Of Victor” book.
Gydesen SOV interview:

Instead of promoting Come, he Instead took every opportunity to promote the 1-800-NF & songs from “TGE” on a couple of U.S. television shows & shot a video for “Love Sign” but ignored WB’s requests to make a video for “Letitgo”.
Even years later Prince didn’t help Come’s cause when on his website the cover was stamped with “Contractual Obligation” further devaluing it.

A mutual lack of commitment from WB & P — consequently the biggest victim of this debacle was the Come album & its 10 cracking tracks.
Incredibly starting out as a musical, Come is one of P’s most homogeneous & cohesive albums.

The sound design is uniform & it is funky & beat driven on most of the songs.

He went for GROOVE in place of genre diversity that occupied most of his previous eclectic albums.
It’s the other out & out Dance Album after 1999 with most of the tracks being geared for the dance floor.

It’s his most electronic & contemporary-sounding album after 1999, with drum programming & synths appearing on most of the songs.

Come had Techno but also Blues too!
Come deserves more applause & greater critical acclaim.

It needs to be revisited by those who doubt its brilliance.

It’s a firm fan favourite occupying a top spot in most P stans album lists.

This really says something about its value, its endurance & its importance.
Album Cover

The artwork (from SOV book) has a funeral theme which ties in with Prince now being dead.

Prince is pictured in front of 2 Cathedrals.

This one below is La Sagrada Familia, a famous gothic Cathedral in Barcelona, Spain designed by the brilliant artist Gaudi.
The Cathedral has 3 facades & the Passion facade is most striking, resembling the bones of a skeleton.

It is dedicated to the Passion of Christ — the suffering of Jesus during his crucifixion & intended to portray the sins of man.
Gaudi’s intention was to strike fear into onlookers — to show the severity & brutality of Christ's sacrifice hence why this facade is quite dramatic.

It faces the setting sun, indicative & symbolic of the death of Christ.
The scenes sculpted into the façade may be divided into 3 levels:

Level 1 - Depicts scenes from Jesus' last night before the crucifixion

Level 2 - Portrays the Calvary, or Golgotha of Christ

Level 3 - The level of Death - Burial & Resurrection of Christ can be seen.
Therefore the Passion façade is symbolic of:

— Jesus’ suffering
— his crucifixion
— place of crucifixion
— his resurrection.

I would suggest the cover wasn’t a random choice.

I believe it was carefully chosen by Prince to parallel his bitter experiences of the early 90’s.
*Prince too was suffering during this 90’s period.

*Prince too felt he had been crucified by WB

*The WB crucifixion took place in public

*Prince too had died & he was resurrected as Symbol

Hence, the cover might have been deliberately chosen to mirror Prince’s experiences.
On the cover Prince is in front of the Cathedral’s other facade - ‘Nativity’ which is dedicated to the birth of Jesus.

2 chameleons can be found at either side of this façade which are said to be ‘symbolic of change’!

This bizarre fact also connects to Prince.
Prince could also be described as being a “chameleon” - he is also changing.

He is changing from Prince to Symbol.

It’s either one of those strange quirky coincidences or it’s intentional & well planned.

When asked what “Symbol” represented, P said it was “Spiritual”.
Moreover the mirror message on the inner sleeve is directly inspired by an inscription featured on a door in the Nativity facade!!!

Check it out 👇 - also a mirror message just like the sleeve.

Credit to @EdgarKruize who discovered this - our brains always work well together.
Yet there is still more — there are “Doves” 🕊 🕊 on the entrance of the Nativity side of the La Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

Prince must have deeply thought about this as it all ties it in with what was going on in his life at the time.

Or was it just a strange quirk of fate.
It doesn’t stop there — the image of the Sagrada Cathedral resembles a vagina. Not the first time P imagery is used to depict sex organs.

P is standing with his legs parted and below him is the word “Come”.

The allusion — P is about to penetrate the vaginal entrance!
🤣
Even more, P is also pictured in front of (another Cathedral) The Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia aka Barcelona Cathedral — dedicated to a ‘Young Virgin’ who suffered martyrdom during Roman times.

Again there is a subtle reference here to Prince’s martyrdom in the early 90’s.
So figure this....

P is about to penetrate the 1st Cathedral & he’s gonna defile the 2nd one dedicated to the young Virgin.

I mean look at HIM!

He’s all cocksure on the 1st one like - yeah baby u ready 4 me.

In front of the 2nd, he’s like - should I really be doing this ...
One last thing on the Cathedrals — if we go back to the shot of the Sagrada Cathedral - what do you see atop of the gate - 👇

The Symbol!!!

P’s Symbol probably drew inspiration from the “Globus Cruciger” aka "the orb & cross".
The Globus Cruciger is a Christian symbol of authority representing Christ's dominion over the orb of the world.

The Who’s logo could have inspired it too as it is known that Prince loved watching Quadrophenia.

The Planets too inspired it w/ I will cover on my Space thread.
Sex vs God

The lyrical content of Come is amongst his most pornographic.

If you delve deep into Prince’s discography you will eventually come to the realisation:

The more sexually explicit the lyrics!

The more likely & stronger the spiritual message!
Come is filled with metaphorical scripture.

The spoken word interludes reference the steamy Song of Songs/Solomon 8:3:

“His left hand would be under my head, And his right hand would embrace me.”
This scriptures meaning — If you love Christ, then you have every reason to love your spouse, regardless of the limitations in your relationship.

You can love your spouse as a way of living out your love for Christ.
So fulfilling the act of love/sexual intercourse with your spouse is an act of loving God & you become a conduit for God’s love via that act.

Hence why Prince was so preoccupied with sex because it might have been his pathway to reaching God.

Sex brought him closer to God!
Some people get to God via celibacy, prayer, pilgrimage, charity or good deeds but Prince use to get to God via sexual enlightenment.

This was his whole raison d'être.

Once you understand this, you can make sense of Prince’s whole preoccupation with sex in the early years.
Then, you also understand that he is not necessarily being pornographic or overtly sexual, albeit it might seem like that to many who do not share this understanding.

So Prince’s preferred way of reaching God was via sexual enlightenment however misguided this may seem to some.
Once this gets into your mindset, it can stick & be used to justify many different & seemingly bizarre actions.

This might have been stuck in Prince’s mind during the early part of his career as it would explain a lot about that period & his addiction to sex talk.
This is why in Prince World there always seems to be a dichotomy between Sex & God!

But for Prince there was no such dichotomy at all, both went hand in hand & it was simply his pathway to reaching God.

For Prince, Sex was a conduit to loving God.

Sex lead to God!
Come also contains connecting segues of rushing water between tracks.

“Water” is used in a variety of metaphorical ways in Scripture as a:

Sign of troublesome times in life —

“that can and do come”

(Psalm 32:6 ; Psalms 69:1 Psalms 69:2 Psalms 69:14 Psalms 69:15 ; Isa 43:2).
Enemies —

“In some contexts water stands for enemies who can attack and need to be overcome”.

(2 Sam 22:17-18 ; Psalm 18:16-17 ; 124:4-5 ; 144:7 ; Isa 8:7 ; Jer 47:2).”
Salvation & Eternal Life —

“In both the Old and New Testaments, the word "water" is used for salvation and eternal life, which God offers humankind through faith in his Son”

(Isa 12:3 ; 55:1 ; Rev 21:6 ; Revelation 22:1 Revelation 22:2 Revelation 22:17).
Spiritual Cleansing —

“water sometimes symbolizes the spiritual cleansing that comes with the acceptance of God's offer of salvation”.

(Ezek 36:25 ; Heb 10:22 ).
“In Ephesians 5:26, the "water" that does the cleansing of the bride, the church, is directly tied in with God's Word, of which it is a symbol.”

So Water is a “Symbol” of “God’s Word”!

Could this also partly be the reason why Prince changed his name to “Symbol”.
All of this ☝️ties in with P’s 90’s experiences:

*P was facing troublesome times

*P was facing his enemies WB & the Press who were attacking him & whom he had to overcome

*P was seeking God’s salvation

*P was cleansing & undergoing a new spiritual rebirth
And it ties in with the title of the album “Come” too as this word also has reference in scripture.

It makes numerous appearances in the Book of Revelation — Chapter 22 Christ says:

“Behold I “come” quickly” (verses 7, 12 & 20)
Chapter 17 mentions “Come” & the “water of life” again w/ is consistent with the idea of water as purifying the soul & indicating a spiritual rebirth.

Reinforcing again the name change from Prince to Symbol & his statement:

“This is the Dawning of a New Spiritual Revolution”!
So:

*Rushing Water segues between tracks

*Spoken introduction segues between tracks

*Use of the word “Come”

Via this, is it possible to thread together a spiritual rebirth.

And a theme of preparing oneself to “come” to a higher level of consciousness.
If we look at the album tracks:

“Come” & Space,” are about attaining sexual enlightenment,

“Pheromone” to “Dark” are filled with conflicts & issues that Prince needs to resolve to emancipate his mind in order to prepare for the spiritual rejuvenation.
“Solo,” “Letitgo,” & “Orgasm” complete the cleansing & journey to spiritual rebirth.

So all of this = Prince is dead & is resurrected as Symbol.

He was going through a process of purification & spiritual rebirth.

Hence the “The Dawning of a New Spiritual Revolution”!
If you piece together all of the above, it runs contrary to the belief that “Come” was just put out there & Prince didn’t care for it.

It seems that Prince put a lot of thought into this album.

Not only does it sound cohesive but it also contains a cohesive spiritual theme.
Before Come, both Purple Rain & Lovesexy contained cohesive spiritual themes to reflect his spiritual rejuvenation.

He told the press the same thing in interviews.

He also disclosed to the press that “Symbol” meant something very spiritual to him too.
Around this time he was heavily into Betty J Eadie’s book “Embraced by the Light” which was about her near death experience.

I previously touched upon this in my PR 🧵

He even dedicated the song “Dolphin” to her from TGE.

And he would tell everyone to read this book.
Prince was seeking knowledge from different sources & combining it to arrive at his own unique form of religious spiritualism & for him sex continued to retain a huge importance to attaining enlightenment.

His thoughts & ideas would continue to evolve & change as time went on.
This album was critically slammed by the lazy music press who dismissed it as one of his most pornographic works & as usual they completely missed the spiritual reference points.

Or they simply didn’t bother to delve into the deeper aspects because it didn’t interest them.
A more thorough examination of this album would have revealed the true hidden depths.
Beauty is hidden
& it must be discovered
& to discover one needs to explore
& once exploration leads to discovery
a better understanding is achieved.
Beauty is a hidden gem just like ‘eyes that fall somewhere between rubies and stars’ (Space).

Come is unique, his 1st posthumous release & it came during exceptional times.

It’s a beautiful album of sublime depth, it’s a journey, it’s the Dawning of a New Spiritual Revolution.
This phraseology “Dawning of a New Spiritual Revolution” wasn’t just rooted in spiritualism tho’

It served a dual purpose, it had another more practical application for Prince.

In the 80’s he revolutionised music.

In the 90’s he was trying to revolutionise the music business.
This ‘New Revolution’ was also about business emancipation & industry innovation.

A new & revolutionary way 2 own & control his intellectual property & finding new innovative ways 2 distribute music to his fan base.

90’s - he created the standard future music industry model.
Finally, I’ll leave you with this - what Prince said about his 90’s experience.

Just imagine yourself in his position: — your ID is colonised
— your name is owned by a corporation
— your creations (children) are taken away from you

Just imagine how MAD it would make you feel!
Hopefully, this has inspired you to revisit the Come album.

At the very least, when you next visit the Sagrada Cathedral in Spain, maybe you’ll never look at it in same way ever again!

You can check out my other Prince mega threads via the link below.

Below is a reminder of the full listing for the next 10 days.

Tomorrow @Miss_EThompson is up to take you through the title track “Come”.

Be ready for new revelations.

I’ll see you again this Wednesday in Space.
