Let’s start by thinking about a little bit about #Juneteenth and Houston! #CiteBlackWomen
Emancipation Park in Houston was purchased by Freedmen in 1872. It has hosted #Juneteenth celebrations like the one these lovely ladies participated in ever since. #CiteBlackWomen

#Juneteenth celebrations were planned months in advance. Committees on committees. Entertainment. Food. Speakers. Decorations. Parade. Church services. Music. Children's presentation. Did I mention Food!? It's a Black Family Reunion! #CiteBlackWomen
Houston's @TrinityUMCHTexas and Antioch Missionary Baptist Church purchased Emancipation Park in 1872 so that black Houstonians had a place to gather outdoors. Segregation laws banned them from city parks, so they made their own! #Juneteenth #CiteBlackWomen
In case you want to follow them, that's @TrinityUMCHTX!
Now that I've got Houston on your mind. Be sure to check out historian @TyinaSteptoe's award winning book book: Houston Bound: Color and Culture in a Jim Crow City, links to buy it are on her website, tyinasteptoe.com. #CiteBlackWomen #Juneteenth
Stay tuned for my next thread on #CiteBlackWomen beginning at 2PM ET. #Juneteenth began in Texas, but when Black Texans began moving to Oklahoma in the early 1900s, they brought it with them.

If you are marching today, mask up and stay hydrated. #BLM ❤️🖤💚
