I'm getting requests for comments as a #NativeAmerican man regarding the Washington @Redskins.

Here is a #thread with my comments:

Yes - I want the team to #ChangeTheName.

Yes - I think the term is a racial slur.

These images I took at a @NFL game tailgate: do not honor me. ImageImage
Notice in the above photo, I blurred the faces of the people wearing items that they feel represent the @Redskins.

I blurred their faces because I do not want them to be targeted, ridiculed, called names or simply disrespected.

In other words: I don't want them treated like me.
Native regalia is an honor.

It is not a cartoon.

Every aspect has cultural meaning, the items have a special traditional and family connection.

Every bit of regalia is sacred.

Wearing it is an honor.

What these people are doing is dishonorable and disrespectful.
People have told me often:

"The name @Redskins is a memorial to Natives.
Without the team, history would be forgotten of the Native warriors you are. The name honors you."

I say:

"I don't want what you consider to be an honor and I don't need the NFL to remember my history."
Look I get it ... some people aren't offended. Trust me I hear about it.

But there are a lot of people - especially children, who are really harmed by it.

Where is your humanity world?

Why are you fighting so hard against people in pain?

What are you trying to win?
So yes I say #ChangeTheName.

I have had some great days, and then, 'bam' I see cars like this.

Stereotypical images of my culture plastered all over people's cars, who know nothing about who Native people really are. Image
The Washington @Redskins also did a lot of PR and compiled a mini-doc of Native people stating they liked the name.

And here is a microaggression screen cap:

"We are concerned with other issues" as if Native people are not capable of caring for more than one thing at a time. Image
So think of this analogy:

If I threw a grenade that exploded and injured a few people near it, then asked other people, not near it "were you injured?"

If they say, "No we weren't bothered by the grenade."

Is it ok to throw grenades because that one group wasn't injured?
The name of the Washington team really hurts me.

I feel real, solid, deep pain. As does my beautiful and gentle wife @DelSchilling.

My stomach hurts writing these tweets.

Native youth have told me it hurts them.

If that isn't enough for you, then I don't know what could be. Image

So, should we celebrate #Thanksgiving?

As a Native American journalist, author and speaker, I have often been asked this question.

Here are my thoughts and responses regarding this holiday in a #Thanksgiving #Thread.

(I first posted this in 2021.)
Let me first say it is possible to both celebrate a day of thanks as well as remember.

First - #Thanksgiving history:

In 1621, Pilgrims celebrated a feast w/Wampanaog men, but it was not repeated in the years to follow.
In 1636, a murdered white man was found in a boat & the Pequot were blamed. In retaliation, settlers burned Pequot villages. 100's died

English Major John Mason rallied his troops to burn Pequot wigwams and attacked and killed hundreds of men, women and children.

Read my article in @NativeViewpoint regarding why I will never celebrate #ColumbusDay.

Here is a thread on the atrocities of #Columbus that I also share in a YouTube video embedded in the article.

[Trigger Warning #ChristopherColumbus #thread]
Columbus Day was promoted by the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization in the 1930s that wanted a Catholic hero. President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the day into law as a federal holiday in 1937.
#Columbus stole a crew member's reward.

Columbus offered a year's salary reward for the crew member who first cited land. Though a sailor saw the land, Columbus said he saw a dim light the night before and kept the reward for himself.

Hello Twitter family.
Right now I'm sitting at my father's bedside in an emergency room.
He has a fever (not likely COVID) He is elderly and sick. He also has dementia. He is 72.
It gives me a lot of pause and thoughts.
Can you please read and share this #thread about my father.
I think of the 54 years I have known my father. And I realize there is so much more I could have learned from him. So much I don't know about his life, his feelings about things.
There are things that I will never know. Things I never asked him.
What did his room look like as a kid? Did he read comic books? What was his favorite subject in school?
I realize there is so much.
I'm a journalist, I ask people about their lives every day. I ask them questions I have never asked my father.
Dammit ...

I am Mohawk.

On this day of #TruthAndReconciliation and #OrangeShirtDay ...

Let me tell you how my family has been affected by #ResidentialSchools.
My Mohawk grandmother, my Tota was sent forcibly to #ResidentialSchool.

My great-grandmother Minnie (Who did not speak English) was told that she could not have her daughters back.

Undeterred, she went back in the middle of the night and helped her daughters to escape.
I am proud of this blood running through my veins, my great tota Minnie and my tota are warriors.

But the story doesn't end there.

For the rest of my life, my tota was terrified.

So the @MLB team Cleveland are changing their name from the @Indians to the #Guardians.

As a Native journalist that has covered sports and Native mascots for years -- I am so glad to say goodbye to the horrendous image of #ChiefWahoo

Here are my thoughts in a #thread
