WMSC experts are on scene at Silver Spring (with social distancing protocols) where at least one car of a #WMATA Red Line train toward Glenmont derailed around 11:20 a.m.
According to the preliminary required formal notification to us from #WMATA (so pending further investigation), the eight-car train appears to have passed a red signal prior to the second car derailing. No rider injuries
The WMSC’s focus is to determine all the causal factors that led to the accident. The investigation includes photos and measurements of the scene, any damage to railcars, tracks or switches - and completion of that documentation prior to re-railing
Preliminary information suggests the eight-car train passed a red signal prior to the derailment. The first car of the train entered a center storage track, known as a pocket track, while the second car of the train appears to have continued moving in the direction of Glenmont.
The pocket track was already occupied by a train that was out of service. The lead truck (front set of wheels) on the second car derailed, and the second car appears to have made contact with the first car.
The full investigation will require interviews, data collection and review of system recordings in coming days and weeks to confirm the status of switches and signals, level of communication, emergency response actions, amount of damage and a variety of other details.
Our experts are taking part in interviews of those involved and will be reviewing the data downloads and videos as part of the investigation
