1/WMSC staff continues work with WMATA to investigate the collision early this morning between two Metrorail trains. WMSC staff has and will continue to participate in interviews of train operators and are at the scene throughout the day.
2/WMATA staff are conducting the investigation with WMSC staff fully participating in all investigative activities. The WMSC is overseeing the investigation to ensure that it is thorough and sufficient.
3/Here is what we know: at 12:54 this morning two eastbound trains that were not carrying passengers collided b/w Foggy Bottom and Farragut West. Both were 3K-series trains. Operators of both trains were transported for medical attention.
4/The six-car striking train (#700) contained cars: L3008-3009 3010-3011 3019-3018T. The six-car stationary train (#755) contained cars: L3141-3140 3121-3120 3206-3207T. Car 3008 struck Car 3207 and Car 3008 was significantly damaged.
5/The WMSC staff will be closely evaluating the VMS—Vehicle Monitoring System—for more info on train speed and braking.
6/The WMSC will look closely at the trains' movements immediately before the incident and to check for any anomalies.
7/The WMSC will also look into scheduling and possible operator fatigue or distraction, control center operations, signal and train control systems, vehicle integrity and maintenance to determine the cause.
