#futureneurologists, you asked & we heard! @NMatch2021

Top 10 things we love about our program:

1) “The University of Mississippi Medical Center, located in Jackson, is the state's ONLY academic health science center.”

2/
Pathology: Being the state’s big academic hub, our residents see such so much variety during their training, that when they 🎓 and practice in the real 🌎, they react something like this 👇
3/
No discrimination: Our program led by Dr. Alissa Willis(@myelinmd) and Dr.@HartmutUschmann firmly believes that we don’t discriminate on the basis of race, color, region, religion, sex or orientation. We have always matched a good mix of residents - aka “A Mini United Nations”
4/
Autonomy: Our residency believes in giving the residents a sense of autonomy while also having a graduated level of responsibility.
We start our Neurology continuity clinics as a PGY-1, but the intern clinics are capped at 2 pts until the year end. That’s 3 hrs to see 2 pts!
5/
SIGN: We love our medical students, especially those interested in Neurology 🤗 This past academic yr, @UMMC_SIGN was featured as the SIGN chapter of the month - Feb 2020! This was possible with the combined efforts of our residents, faculty and the SIGN officers. #SIGNup
6/
Funducation: Our residents love this! We sorted our residents into Hogwartseque houses and they compete throughout the year for the UMMC House Cup! But also the ultimate bragging rights 🤫
This was introduced by our Professor Snape (@nsicumommamd14) #hogwarts #HarryPotter
7/
Calls: Our new PGY-2s are paired with a senior “buddy” for the first 2 months while they are learning the ropes on call. Our chiefs Zack Goodwin and @PostDomRhythm have conscientiously designed the schedule with NO 28 hr calls!
Avg / month:
PGY2 : 4
PGY3: 2
PGY4: 1
#wellness
8/
Residents as Mentors: We are designed in a way that residents are paired with mentors (senior residents and faculty). Most of our residents like Silu Lu (PGY-3) chose to have 2 resident mentors (Life mentor for issues outside of work; Career mentor to discuss work issues)#YOLO
9/
Wellness: This initiative is championed by Dr. Gunturu who led it as a resident and now as the associate program director! From having frequent potlucks, bake-offs, journal clubs at local restaurants, monthly “Whine-N-dine”, secret santa, bi-annual retreats... we got it!
10/
Adapting to the new norm: We value our residents more now than ever, as they are the pandemic front line workforce! What have we done to help out:
a) PPE for residents
b) Virtual lectures
c) COVID-19-anxiety/stress helpline
d) 24 hr Meal cards
e) Wellness half days
