.@BMWGroup places sustainability at the centre of its strategy moving forward. “I firmly believe the fight against climate change and how we use resources will decide the future of our society – and of the BMW Group," says CEO Oliver Zipse.

For the first time, #BMW is setting CO2 reduction targets per vehicle that extend throughout the entire lifecycle: from the supply chain through production to the end of the use phase. The aim is to achieve at least one third fewer emissions across the entire spectrum by 2030.
.@BMWGroup is basing its goals on the guidelines of the recognised Science-Based Targets Initiative [sciencebasedtargets.org], which it will also join. Among other things, this means that the CO2 emissions from the production of fuels are also included (“well-to-wheel” approach).
Having already cut emissions per car built by more than 70% since 2006, @BMWGroup says now aims to reduce its direct emissions (Scope 1 + 2) by a further 80% from 2019 levels by 2030. They will then be less than 10% of what they were in 2006. #Sustainability #ClimateChange
In addition, @BMWGroup says will also fully offset its remaining CO2 emissions (Scope 1 + 2) from 2021 on with appropriate certificates.
In ten years, the goal is to have a total of more than seven million electrified BMW Group vehicles on the roads – around two thirds of them with a fully-electric drive train. This should lower CO2 emissions from vehicles per kilometre driven by 40%.
To ensure its partners fight climate change with the same determination and impact, @BMWGroup says a vehicle part supplier’s carbon footprint will be a key decision factor in when awarding purchasing contracts worth in total more than €40 billion per year. #Sustainability #CO2
.@BMWGroup is now adopting many of the ideas that rivals @VWGroup and @Daimler have already addressed, in part because their current sustainability plan is still valid and only set to expire at the end of this year. See my story for context: europe.autonews.com/automakers/bmw…
This is however unique: #BMW plans to increase the share of secondary material in its cars significantly by 2030 and is "exploring very far-reaching scenarios." Cars already must be 95% recyclable – but the percentage of secondary material in new vehicles is still relatively low.
In terms of tailpipe emissions, the biggest source of carbon dioxide for combustion engine-focused carmakers, the 40% reduction target in grams of CO2 per kilometre by 2030 effectively means it's taking current mandatory European targets and voluntarily applying them worldwide.
