It was a matter of pride, as President of @BombayChamber, to host #UrbanThinkersCampus Series 2 in partnership with @UNHABITAT on "Financing Recovery for Resilient and Sustainable Cities #TakeAction4Cities #COVID19 Image
Enriching discussion with global thought leaders on #sustainability, urban planning, city administration & finance. Dialogue centred around sustainable development of urban centres & solutions on making cities resilient, particularly in the current context of #COVID19. @UNHABITAT Image
Globally, there is sufficient funds but it's still difficult to get enough cash for #development. The silver lining? We can evolve #solutions to correct the situation. The best time to act for #sustainable cities was 20 years ago. The next best time? Today! @UNHABITAT

#COVID19 has opened a window for transformative change in #foodystems:
"COVID has provided an opportunity for socio-economic transition. We should not be looking to 'go back to normal' but taking this opportunity to restart-to decide on and put into place ways we can improve...
...the #sustainability of our lifestyle, including but not limited to, reducing #greenhouse #emissions, ways to adapt to the inevitability of #climatechange and ways to transform our #economy from #growth, #consumerism and reliance on overseas products to an economy...
...with increased domestic manufacturing of essential products, and #sustainableagriculture, to support a #healthy #egalitarian, not polarised, society. Why not pursue the dream? #Marketgardening used to be a part of our society and often when I was a child in #Sydney we would...

Great comment on our #PandemicGardening survey "#Urbanagriculture has always been practised in #Australian cities...our 'allotments' were our backyards. As Andrea Gaynor has so beautifully documented in Harvest of the Suburbs, [our] backyards produced large amounts of food...
...with urban consolidation, millions of Australians no longer have large yards in which to grow food. We need to learn how to get productive growing space into cities-in public spaces, on the privately owned common property in strata schemes, on balconies, on verges, & on roofs.
#Covid19 has hopefully concentrated people's minds on the fragility of food supply lines. The supermarkets will not always have food in them. If we can supplement our food supply with leafy greens, herbs and fruit from our own gardens, we will be much more #foodsecure.

Key messages: evidence shows archaeology is not a block to planning applications, loosening planning laws undermines practice of sustainable development, and the NPPF is the only real protection afforded to non-designated archaeology. @BBCNews @BBCScienceNews @SkyNews @Telegraph
Protection of archaeological remains in England is very weak compared to other countries e.g. Ireland, unless remains are Scheduled or in an Area of Archaeological Importance. Let's not erase the past by not even looking for archaeology before development.

Further to this #popup #cycling #sustainability #zerocarbon #worldcyclingday might appear counter-intuitive that Manchester is not supportive of pop up cycle lanes. So a thread👇🚲🚴🚴‍♀️
Pop up cycle lanes have traction with the press and looks like they are also popular with (commuter) cyclists. Light segregation schemes are becoming increasingly popular in other cities on the back of the Covid19 pandemic #Cycling #Manchester
Sure they offer value for money and with being temporary, they also offer adaptability. Estimated cost of constructing a kerb-separated cycle track in central London is
approximately £700,000 per km, compared to around £60,000 per km for light segregation itf-oecd.org/sites/default/…

There’s so much happening in 🌍 right now - including many tragedies - but farmers are asking you to lend your support to the campaign to protect 🇬🇧 food standards from being undercut in future trade deals.

Here’s why this is important & why you should care [1] Image
British #farmers produce your food to some of the highest standards of animal #welfare, environmental #sustainability & #safety in the 🌍

Many of these are 🇪🇺 standards. With #Brexit we are now free to alter them. But what does this mean? [2]
So domestic production standards are set to rise even higher, which is great (who doesn’t want quality?)

But govt looks set to conclude new trade deals with countries such as 🇺🇸 which would allow food imports which it would be illegal to produce here [3]

Identifying hard and soft sweeps has been basically a solved problem for almost 15 years. This is because loci drifting (a) in the population have very different frequency histories than loci being swept to fixation (b).
However, selection on complex, quantitative traits does not leave signatures of sweeps. When selecting quantitative traits, the trait changes rapidly, but this is due to hundreds or thousands of loci having small changes in allele frequency (c).
This has made it difficult to identify polygenic selection loci. However, in our recent preprint, we report results which basically solve this problem.
1) We have large datasets. 2) We use appropriate models.

Wow!! One of the most outstanding books I’ve ever read.

Sand Talk: How #IndigenousThinking can save the World

A great recommendation for these days!!

Thanks Tyson Yunkaporta. Your book is a gem to be discovered: #wisdom #values

A few years ago, I wrote a post about the #philosophy of Good Living or Living Well from Indigenous People
academia.edu/6528305/_Good_…

I talked about #biomimicry, learning from Nature with humility, and then we could also learn from the wisdom of indigenous people
I've decided to start a month-long project where I'll tweet a “wise” tip about "Sand Talk" every day during April. 30/30

#WiseBoomerang #1 This will be the 1st one.
It's about #humility the antonymous of #hubris. #Communication #DialogicalEthics #Connectedness

**New Paper** “Feasible Alternatives to Green Growth” out today in @Naturesustainab (w/ @simonedalessa12 , @krisdittmer & Tiziano Distefano) nature.com/articles/s4189…

Here is a brief summary 1/6
#sustainability #inequality #academictwitter #degrowth
The paper is based on our Eurogreen model which simulates the French economy with heterogeneous households, industries and RES. We focus on the distributive impact of #renewableenergy policies and whether social policies can foster a low-carbon transition with social equity. 2/6
The simulation results suggest that a combination of policies for renewable energy, carbon taxes and incentives to innovation (green growth - GG), even when successful in terms of GHG emissions, increases inequality and unemployment 3/6

Range anxiety is a real concern for changing our mindset around #ElectricVehicles.

Just how close to the left of the needle can we go?

Tomorrow I’ve got a few offsite #CSIRO meetings between #Newcastle & #Sydney, so why not come on:
“A day in the life of an #EV

Starting, NOW!
Off on the first leg of the #EV trip, leaving work for the day: I have an 8am meeting so will get a head start.

Leaving the charging point behind & starting with a ~full charge + range of 429 km.

Bring on tomorrow’s #RangeAnxiety experiment!
@TheDriven_io @AEVA_National #CSIRO
First leg of #RangeAnxiety experiment 🧪went as expected:

16 km trip from Office to Home, 15 km reduction in range.

Now to take the dog 🐕 for a bush walk & await the next experimental leg.
