Over the centuries, we've learned how to use #science to *make* things. That's called #engineering. But we have yet to perfect the practice of using science to help us to *do* things. And it is this gap that's preventing solutions to #covid19 ...

We can see this gap in the wide discrepancy between 1,000s of research projects for #covid19, and yet even months into the #pandemic, there are people on the front lines - universities, event centers, aged care facilities - who are struggling...
By way of example, take this great podcast from @howardbauchner of @JAMA_current from this week: edhub.ama-assn.org/jn-learning/au… . There's fantastic discussion of the results of recent studies about #schoolreopenings from @kathyaugerpeds and Julie Donohue...
...some of the best and latest research on this critical topic. But when the topic turns to "OK, given these findings, what should we do?", the answers are qualitative, and boil down to the fact that there are lots of interventions possible and we need to share results...
...between the 13,000 school districts in the US so we can learn better. We can do better friends, much better. For the Apollo missions, we didn't say "let's send out 13,000 spacecraft" and see the results. We don't tell pilots, "please crash a few aircraft and we'll learn"...
...no, there is a discipline of rigorous decision making. It involves using #simulation, #artificialintellgience, data, and the results of these great studies from @jama_current and more. And the pieces of this discipline are mature. It is now for us to integrate them...
