Many thanks to ⁦@LindseyReiser⁩ for hosting me this Saturday PM on ⁦@MSNBC⁩ I explained why we have a robust system in place in the US to assure the safety and efficacy of #COVID19 #vaccines. Also why immunity to COVID19 after infection likely lasts longer than 3 mos
I also explained why the technical hurdle to develop a #COVID19 #vaccine is not that high. The hard part is the quality control and assurance and safety and efficacy testing in phase 3 clinical trials
This is why when the Russians rush a vaccine and call it “Sputnik” it gives the world the impression that Russian science and their quality systems are weak. This may or may not be the case but their leadership did themselves and Russian science a disservice through their actions

1/3: Being asked about the Russian vaccine, my take:

1. The technical hurdle to develop a #COVID19 vaccine is actually not very high

2. It's an "old school" problem in virology to induce high levels of virus neutralizing antibodies and T cell help.

3. Many ways to do this, we're pursuing a recombinant protein approach, others mRNA, adenovirus, live virus, inactivated virus, all with varying degree of effectiveness.

4. The hard part is making a vaccine that you know actually works and safe in humans: That takes time

5. So sure, the Russians can make a vaccine, as have many groups. The worry is that they bypassed the essential to QC/QA, clinical testing to ensure its efficacy & safety.

6. That's why anyone who calls this "a race" is basically advertising their science illiteracy

I think in terms of published data we have the following:
Reasonable VNA or T cells on:
1. 10 volunteers with 2 doses of AZ vaccine
2. 12 volunteers with 2 doses of Pfizer vaccine
3. 15 volunteers with 2 doses of Moderna vaccine
4. 56 volunteers with 2 doses of Novovax vaccine
To go from that to say we'll vaccine millions of Americans by November 3 is unreasonable.
