#MinimumWage is an important topic that everyone needs to give a great deal of thought into

A #THREAD:

We live in #LateStageCapitalism, we’re in a world where the rich and powerful only care about how much their actions impact their wallets.
This sucks for the vast majority of people who have not had money actively siphoned into their pockets by the politicians that are bought
The rich use their money to make sure that they can’t lose their money, and that makes it so much harder to get any meaningful minimum wage policy passed, but please indulge me while I lay out what I think would be a fantastic way to fix the minimum wage problem
When minimum wage was first passed, it was supposed to a #LivingWage, enough for a single person (the man of the family back then) to be able to support his wife and children, while being able to pay for a house, a car, & everything that allow his family to live well
Now we live in a world where most households have at least 2 people working to support their lifestyles. This is very much due to the fact that wages haven’t kept up with the cost of living, but also is due to the fact that women are able, willing, and want to work as well
Additionally, single people often live with roommates to the same basic effect

Here’s my solution to the minimum wage issue, a way to avoid having to #FightFor15, #FightFor20, or #FightFor25, a way to avoid having to continue to fight this battle again to stay above inflation
Tie minimum wage to the #CostOfLiving where you live. If minimum wage should be a living wage, as it was initially intended, then the two concepts should connected by law.
If you live in a fictitious place that only required a household to make $5 an hour to be able to live without major worry, then the minimum wage should reflect that
MIT developed a living wage calculator here:

livingwage.mit.edu

That can show you how much a household needs to make in order to be able to live
Now, because it is true that the majority of people live in situations where their household has at least 2 wages coming in, the minimum wage should be 50%-60% of the total wage that is needed for to meet the living wage in your area
One major benefit to using the law to tie the minimum wage to the cost of living, is to shut down the argument that “raising minimum wage will only increase the cost of goods, making the cost of living go up for everyone”.
This could not be the case anymore, because if corporations and businesses were to increase the cost of goods, then they would also have to increase the minimum wage to keep up with the increased cost of living
Please let me know what you think of my idea, what have I overlooked? I would love feedback to make continue to hone this idea. And please RT so more people can give me their input
