Teaching online this Fall?

To learn how we can make Fall semester better, we asked students (n=60) what professors did when spring courses went online that showed they CARE about their students.

Here's what they said....

(full report coming soon!)

A very popular response was professor accessibility via frequent office hours and email made students feel cared for. Quick responses and lots of opportunities to connect were very appreciated. 2/x
Next, students appreciated professor flexibility and relaxing of certain course policies (e.g., grading, deadlines, test taking procedures). Being at home made their schedules more chaotic and brought up new challenges. Flexibility helped make it work and eased the stress. 3/x
Students really loved when professors took a break from lecture to just talk about....ALL OF IT. Life, the news, how it's going, frustrations, etc.

Just saying, "hey everyone, this is hard, let's talk about it" went a long way. 4/x
Students especially loved when professors made individual reach outs to students asking how it's going and if they need to talk about anything or offering one-on-one confidential talks. This conveyed #empathy and made them feel they had an ear if they needed one. 💙

Next, students said they really appreciated being asked for feedback on how things in class were going. Mid-semester evaluations or just informal feedback on whether something is working were mentioned.

Def an easy thing to build into the semester! 6/x
Next, professor showing mastery of the tech and using tech creatively were both perceived as the professor caring and making an effort. Even a positive attitude about the tech seemed to convey that message. 7/x
Finally, professor timeliness with posting lectures, assignments, getting exams back, and all other responsibilities was perceived as a sign the professor cares. 8/x
Most of these are super easy to build into fall courses!

Would love to hear what you all did or have planned to engage and connect with your students! Please share!
