The events of the recent past has shook everyone in some form or other. The pain and hardships faced by certain section of society is making a lot to take notice & do something about it.

1/
In this regard, I had a discussion with 2 wonderful people I met here in Twitter offline. Both brought out the same question.

Why do people don't feel the pain of others?
Those who are blessed by God, why don't they do more?
What stops them to paying a small amt p.m.?

2/
This thread is a summary of what I landed up sharing with them as well as some personal experiences & hopefully food for thought.

Empathy can't be taught. It has to come from within.
Experience tells me that those who have been impacted in past know the value of the same

FACT: Asymptomatic cases can still spread the coronavirus to someone vulnerable.

Vaccinate but still try to protect others who cannot / unable / unwilling (yes, let’s protect them too). #COVID19 #empathy
2) But homes, schools, and businesses are not HBO TV show sets with unlimited testing budgets. How many transmissions will there be if we ditch masks too early? variety.com/2021/tv/news/b…
3) We also aren’t rich like the Yankees— 8th member, shortstop Gleyber Torres, is positive for #COVID19 in latest team outbreak. All 8 members are fully vaccinated, thus “breakthrough positives.” Too early to ditch masks. Think of others not vaccinated yet.forbes.com/sites/joshuaco…

#HumpDayHumanism

I'd just gone hard on some #motivationalinterviewing about smoking cessation with a Grady elder one day. We talked about his grandbabies and his life. We even talked about his "nature."

He was looking deep into my eyes--like it was really resonating.

Yup.
2/
Me: "Well?"
Him: "Well what?"
Me: "What're your thoughts?"
Him: "My thoughts 'bout what?"

I groaned. He was tickled.

Me: "Sir! About quitting smoking?"

He raised one eyebrow at me and laughed again. This raspy, gravelly chuckle.

Him: "Miss Manning?"
3/
Me: *listening*
Him: "Tell me. Have you ever had somebody piss you off on a hourly job real, real bad--then step outside, flick your lighter, and then take a good, hard drag on a menthol cigarette?"

I shook my head no. Because I had not.

Thread: This is a story of an Uber driver with an exceptional heart and compassion. On April 28, a couple of good friends helped me get an urgent bed for my mother (she's been to three hospitals now). Her oxygen was at 80 and dipping. We had one cylinder. We had to shift her.
She was getting worse. I was calling ambulance after ambulance and not a single one was available. I had to take her to a facility 40 kms from my home, based on a cylinder that could run out on the way. I don't have a car. Finally had no other option but to start calling Uber.
At least four of them cancelled. To the fifth one I said, "brother if you're going to cancel, tell me at once, because I can't risk waiting 15-20 minutes and then see you cancelling the trip, so I want to tell you upfront the details so you have the choice."

We live in an attention #economy & what #Tweetiatricians have known for decades (#Twitter started in 2006): importance of drawing attention to factual science-based information as compared to #misinformation & #disinformation, especially on #vaccines

You have to be fast & prolific to play catch up to this. I have 77K tweets, a moderate sized band of 6K followers interested enough to tolerate my volume but use of hashtags allows reach across Twittersphere. Trending hashtags = better for riding a way for that attention economy
If is unclear if we are now so siloed that tweets are ineffective with anti-vaxx. But not all anti-vaxx are QAnon

I have a range of writing & #communication styles

Outside the ED of hospitalist medicine, when I “talk like a man” - direct, unvarnished truths and or “taking up too much space”, there is pushback, affront. Others have noted men with same style as me are👍
#WomeninSTEM
#SciComm
In reality women can’t just email or communicate “like a man” for same results. Society *expects* different communication from women.

I’ve never been an exclamation point person but I use smiley faces

These studies + anecdotal experience:

“women don't negotiate for a very simple reason: they sense—correctly—that it will hurt them if they do... when women *do* negotiate... they end up worse off than if they’d kept their mouths shut”

The lack of empathy, or inability to feel pain the same when someone's skin is black/high malanin and you see them in pain, is literally documented in studies as well as a simply real life disparities.

Please stop with the "empathy" hogwash. We need to address systemic racism.
I *finally* figured out the whole "empathy" silliness and why I feel, increasingly this..

if somoene quotes brene brown at me on "vulnerability" - you think enslaved black women with babies were not vulnerable? Your WHOLE society/culture is designed to not see/feel black pain.
What I figured out is

by touting "empathy"
you can self-appoint yourself as "good"
with "but I am a good person"
or "but she was nice to so and so, therefore"
and deny racism and, more importantly

NOT CHANGE structures or policy
Do NOTHING and feel good about yourself

Sooooo....

...how much does @BreneBrown center on Black women, BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQ?

not opposed to all boundaries per se

BUT am a bit skeptical 🤨 🧐 🤔

in context of #DEI & structural inequity & racism

This can serve as a convenient “opt out” as a part time “ally”
This is a reality for many of us WOC entering spaces defined by white feminists

Am not Black. No one tries to touch my hair. I “pass” in ways that reduces how much I navigate vs get to “be”

When will boundaries of WOC be respected?

(Keep hands to self)

podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bla…
Is it your boundaries that cause you to quietly, when no one can see or hear, act like this?

..to ✅ “I am a good person” for your own ego

while leaving black woman or BIPOC dealing with all the consequences

plus maybe 😒🤢😡😖😞triggered by flimsy, token support yet again

We spend billions per year on the #Leadership industry.
But uh, ahem, er … what exactly are we getting out of it, especially at this moment? A thread --- >
No one has exact figures on the “size” of the global leadership industry, or leadership development market, or whatever you prefer to call it. I have seen numbers from $14B to $24B to $366B (wow) back down to $44B. I honestly don’t think people know what is even involved in these
big numbers. I would guess we are talking mostly about books, speeches (speaker fees?), training modules, training programs, and the like. I’d speculate (but don’t know) that a huge chunk of that is book publishing. A book on every leadership angle has seemingly been written.

„I call for civil disobedience on part of parents

Infants..not allowed in Daycare
nor visit anyone
lonely young ppl

We parents are committed to THEIR well-being
AND
We are the engine
Our tax money PAYS for pensions [& #everything else]“

2/x What is NOW needed is #perspective and #balance

This is only possible through #compassion and #empathy

If one lacks both #compassion and #empathy,
then one should immediately #resign from influencial positions of power where such attributes are prerequisites of their role

My ongoing career dilemma is as follows:

Many people tell me to be less perfectionist or aim lower.

However, a plethora of data reveal there are different standards for different people for gatekeeping/recognition of merit.

I don’t feel comfortable fudging. Others do, tho.
First, I wonder if everybody is given this advice that they should aim lower & have lower standards?

Seeking to do something different than the status quo or “realistic” is generally considered #leadership and #innovation.

Why not push boundaries?

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.111…
For many populations

our pushing the boundaries is the only way they get out of “the margins” or are no longer outside the walls

physical walls
policy walls
payment walls
definitions
access
etc

Those of us w/ identities not mainstream or of marginalized populations see it

I was just reflecting on that this last day.

There is SO much shame in various cultures: healthcare (medicine, nursing), religion (Catholic, Muslim, Jewish), political (conservative or progressive/woke).

People who say “shame on you” are revealing they’ll a lot about selves.
If you shame others, is that your own internal wiring?

Thing is, if you allow shame to be your go to for others, you keep it alive internally. That is SO easily manipulated.

It is also the basis for ostracizing behaviors associated with bullying.

psycnet.apa.org/record/2009-07…
It is the lazy person’s way to express themselves in interpersonal interactions IMHO because most of us had shame instilled in us by culture, religion, family, education. It is why so many have #impostersyndrome which is really is about ego, not ethics or getting 💩 done.

It is not about being "woke" per se as some people claim. It is about caring about measurable results & caring about human life. If you don't care about such things and are in #healthcare, if #equity is merely a hashtag or for "reputation management", you are part of the problem
I understand some people feel those at the margins can be written off or just are not part of their consciousness, irrelevant. That position of privilege goes away in a pandemic. Those people you may disregard most of the time become highly relevant to everyone's wellbeing.
It is very attractive to break problems into little, manageable parts and to isolate yourself to a silo. Too much of science operates this way. Too many of those rewarded within #STEM go narrow and deep. Then the messiness of the real world is not addressed in solutions.

1) Single most important principle in the field of interpersonal relations is Empathic Communication, which means "Seek first to understand, then to be understood"

#Leadership #Communication #empathy
2) There are four forms of communication: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. We spend most of our waking hours communicating. The ability to do it well is absolutely critical for human effectiveness
3) We spend years learning how to read, write and speak but how about listening? What education or training have we had that enables us to listen so that we can really deeply understand another human being.

Modern day #empathy test (i.e. #Bladerunner_2_0)

Build a bon fire (preferable at the beach).

While enjoying the crackle of the fire in warm embrace with friends & family, ask your self:
"Can fire really be evil?"
"Is burning wood really bad for Mother Nature?"
"When did human touch become evil?"
This is purely a *subjective* test. Hence it's about "the feels." The "Feels" are what differentiate between humans and robots.

@sinanaral on false news

#tweetiatrician peeps, @AmerAcadPeds, @AmerMedicalAssn and @PublicHealth @DrTomFrieden @DrPaulOffit @SaadOmer3 @ASlavitt this is a must watch and Prof Aral’s work is so critical.

People>bots are source of misinformation spread

Must watch @TEDTalks by @sinanaral of @MIT & @MITSloan

Fake news spreads as it invokes surprise & disgust. It is also tied to novelty.

Being negative & relying on creating anger & disgust “wins” over positivity. *sigh*

@AmerAcadPeds #tweetiatrician

I’ve long had a concern over the doctors & #Scicomm who “review” “fake news” out there. Yes content may generate anger & disgust among pro-science followers but how often do you boost the stats of the original fake content?

Have also seen sharing of false info about #STEM peers

Empathy is key to finding common ground - a thread on #nonviolence & #politics featuring Ghandi, Churchill, Hitler, & MLKjr
