Our research with @wwf_uk revealed a 15% growth in the UK’s overseas land footprint compared to 2011-2015. But what is a ‘land footprint’?
Land footprint is the term used to describe the amount of land used by an organisation or country, or to create a product. For example, cows require land to graze on in the UK, but a land footprint will also include the space used to grow their feed, even if it’s abroad!
The ‘Riskier Business’ report, published in conjunction with @wwf_uk, showed that the overseas production of just seven commodities had the following impact…
🌍They required an area equal to 88% of the UK’s total landmass
🌍endangered thousands of globally-threatened species
🌍and dramatically increased the UK’s carbon footprint.
These products are cocoa, palm oil, beef & leather, soy, timber, pulp & paper, and rubber.

Introducing due diligence obligations into law will force businesses to acknowledge their environmental responsibilities throughout their supply chains, and will help tackle the #ClimateCrisis.
When enacted, the UK will be one of the first countries in the world to establish legislation requiring a minimum standard of compliance for products that threaten forests.
