For the third day in a row, @amnesty & 40 other legal observers, have been denied access to the technology that would allow them to observe the extradition hearing of @wikileaks founder #JulianAssange.

This was the letter we received yesterday.
#Assange
In her letter, the judge expresses her "regret" at her decision to deny remote access to the proceedings to @amnesty but offers no reason for her decision

Instead, she sets out rules to ensure the court is #COVID19 safe

But remote access is FAR safer than practices I witnessed.
Telling legal observers - some of whom are from the European Parliament - that they have to compete with the public for one of 8 gallery seats results in a scrum of people at the doorway to the court.

There was no distancing & even court officials & police weren't wearing masks. ImageImage
Today, two activists joined the queue for the public gallery in the early hours of the morning in order to give their spaces to @RSF_en observers.

Despite this, the court has so far refused them entry as they're awaiting some "VIPs” who haven't turned up.
End of Day 3. “We were able to monitor about 45 minutes of Prof Paul Rogers’ testimony, in which he spoke of his belief that the US case against #Assange is politically motivated.” @rebecca_vincent @RSF_inter. #JulianAssange #AssangeCase #AssangeHearing
“Sitting 20 feet away from #JulianAssange", I was struck by how much of a shadow of his former self he had become."

For the fourth consecutive day, @amnesty & other fair trial monitors, have been refused access to the proceedings in the #Assange hearing. amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
I met #JulianAssange briefly when he spoke at the Occupy London camp outside St Paul’s Cathedral in 2011

It was an extraordinary time

Occupy Wall St was spreading across the US & the Arab Spring was sweeping N. Africa / Middle East

It was a time when anything seemed possible. ImageImageImageImage
Outside the Old Bailey, #Assange's hearing has been like a carnival. Inside the courtroom, it's been a circus!

Hearing adjourned til Monday due to a #COVID19 scare with husband of one of the US lawyers coming down with Covid-like symptoms.

CARNIVAL: “We have a nice time here. But remember: carnivals come cheap. What matters is the day after.” Slavo Žižek

COURT: “Wherever he went, he’d bring the circus with him. But now - stood before the hanging judge - Moody longed for fewer clowns: for solemnity.“ Emerson Warner
The US Dept of Justice is reportedly obstructing a Spanish High Court request for assistance in its investigation into whether the Spanish company, UC Global & its owner, that spied on #JulianAssange, collaborated with the CIA. (@elpaisinenglish) #Assange elpais.com/internacional/…
Campaigns Director for @RSF_inter, @rebecca_vincent, gives an overview of proceedings so far at #Assange’s extradition hearing. Severe restrictions imposed on trial observers meant RSF is the only NGO that gained access to @wikileaks publisher’s hearing.
We’ve just had news that the US junior counsel’s #COVID19 test has come back negative and #Assange’s extradition hearing will therefore continue on Monday.

The hearing was halted on Thursday due to a #COVID scare. #JulianAssange #Assangecase #DontExtraditeAssange #BREAKING

#BREAKING: Convictions quashed against 4 rights defenders including Amnesty Turkey's Honorary Chair & ex-Director

For more than five years, we've watched the wheels of injustice grind

This brings to an end a travesty of justice of spectacular proportions
amnesty.org/en/latest/news…
“Whilst we celebrate todays decision to quash the convictions of Taner Kilic, İdil Eser, Özlem Dalkıran & Günal Kurşun, we don't forget that across Turkey many human rights defenders are languishing in jail, living in fear of arrest or facing similar prosecutions" @AgnesCallamard Image
“We’re responsible not only for what we say but what we fail to say by staying silent” @Snowden

Massive thanks to the 2+ million people who spoke out when Taner, Idil & the others were jailed @aiww @itspetergabriel @MarkRuffalo @NazaninBoniadi @SirPatStew

Attempt to disrupt the press conference for #AlaaAbdelfattah at #COP27

“Egyptian ‘citizens’ attempted to derail & disturb the press conference giving us all a small sense of the regime of fears & silencing in the country right now” @amnesty’s @AgnesCallamard #FreeAlaa #SaveAlaa Image
Photo🖕via journalist @mmsabry who writes:

“First he tried to give a speech and smear Alaa and Sanaa and then he began yelling and whatnot so security took him out”
The man who tried to disrupt the press conference for #AlaaAbdelfattah was Egyptian MP, Amr Darwish

This footage by journalist @NChulani, shows part of the exchange between him & activist @sana2 at #Cop27

1/ On the 5th anniversary of the Memorandum of Understanding on Migration btw Italy & Libya, @amnesty is call on Italian authorities NOT to renew this agreement which makes them complicit in the abuse & torture of asylum seekers in Libyan detention centres
2/. Since the MoU was signed in 2017,
100,000 people have been intercepted at sea & forcibly returned to #Libya

#Italy & the #EU have been helping the Libyan Coast Guard, providing financial support & technical assets

See protest in Rome (via @ellyesse)
3/. The strategy of outsourcing of border control to Libya focuses on keeping people out of Europe

But #Libya doesn't have the capacity to coordinate rescues & people rescued at sea can’t legally be taken there due to the dire rights violations they there

Matt Hancock to join #ImACeleb!

When @DawnButlerBrent asked Hancock if he was aware of the rprtdly links between Palantir (who he allowed to run the NHS Covid data store) & Cambridge Analytica, he said:

“Er...um...er...I don’t think I was aware of that”
In Sept 2020, #MattHancock launched a 10-year strategy, #GenomeUK, which will transform the NHS & put genomics at the heart of the programme for govt

Incredibly it was launched quietly (on a Saturday!) & received no media coverage

Were #Palantir central? #ImACeleb @imacelebrity
“Still boiling!”

On 13 May 2020, I broke the #CareHomeScandal

The govt had ordered hospitals to send elderly #COVID19 patients to care homes without testing

Who signed the order?

1/. On Sunday - the day of the #BrazilianElections & week before the start of #COP27 - a traffic island in front of the Brazilian embassy by Trafalgar Sq, London, will be transformed into a tropical rainforest, the first of many #RainforestIslands to spring up around the world...
2/. #Rainforestisland – a cornucopia of trees, plants & forest creatures – will be a platform for activists to gather throughout the #COP27 & is intended to amplify Indigenous voices who’ve yet again been excluded from their rightful place on the top table beside decision-makers.
3/. Indigenous communities have conserved & sustained our planet for thousands of years & are the true experts at protecting biodiversity

It is time for us to listen to them, not because they need our help, but because we need theirs! #COP27

#RishiSunak was at the heart of the #HerdImmunityScandal

Every epidemiologist, virologist & scientist made clear that - without a vaccine - #HerdImmunity was an “outcome” never a “strategy”

On 21/9/20, Sunak & Johnson skipped a crucial SAGE meeting to meet two lockdown sceptics
At the Sept meeting that Sunak skipped, SAGE had advised a circuit-breaker lockdown

Scientists had also warned against #Sunak's Eat Out to Help Out scheme which is closely linked to rise in #COViD19 cases & likely helped trigger a rise in deaths among ethnic minority populations
After #Sunak & Johnson were briefed by the anti-lockdown sceptics, they ignored SAGE’s advice to:

1. introduce a circuit-breaker lockdown

2. close pubs, restaurants & gyms

3. stop households mixing in each other’s homes

4. stop face-to-face teaching at universities & colleges
