Rani Meenakshi took over the Madurai Nayak kingdom after the death of her husband, Vijayaranga Chokkanathar.Her husband’s relatives tried to usurp the kingdom from her & invited Chanda sahib of Arcot for assistance.Desperate to save the her & country, she paid Rs 1 cr to him and

asked him to swear on his ‘Holy Book’ that he won’t harm her & the Kingdom. Chanda Sahib made the promise accordingly on the Holy book in a place known as Dalavai Mandapam in Trichy. Meenakshi allowed him to enter the Trichy fort based on the promise but Chanda Sahib didn’t

keep his word. He jailed her & annexed her kingdom by force. When she asked about the promise, Chanda Sahib told her that he did the swearing on a brick & not on the book. Dejected by this & to save her from disgrace, she committed suicide by consuming poison.

உள் முறை வெள்ளம் மூழ்கி ஆர்தருபு
மீண்டும் பீடு உயர்பு ஈண்டி அவற்றிற்கும்
உள்ளீடு ஆகிய இரு நிலத்து ஊழியும்

அந்த வெள்ளத்தில் மூழ்கிய உலகத்தை வெளிக்கொணர்ந்து திருமாலாகிய நீதான் நிலைநிறுத்தினாய்

செய்குறி ஈட்டம் கழிப்பிய வழிமுறை

இப்படி உலகை அழித்து மீண்டும் படைக்கின்ற விளையாட்டை தொடர்ந்து நடத்தினாய்

கேழல் திகழ்வரக் கோலமொடு பெயரிய
ஊழி ஒருவினை உணர்த்தலின் முதுமைக்கு
ஊழியாவரும் உணரா
ஆழி முதல்வ நிற்பேணுதும் தொழுது

வராகக் கோலம் எடுத்து ஊழியை எல்லாம் கடந்து நிற்கும் திருமாலே

Close on the heels of Adi Perukku, let’s look at a mechanism used in olden days to irrigate the farm lands, especially in Chola desam. ‘Kumizhi Thumbu’ was predominately used in lakes / reservoirs where the water is stored for irrigation purposes. The structure has two pillars

The pillars are connected by two horizontal bars with a hole on the centre. There is a stone box beneath the water level which has a round passage to the pipeline underneath that. This is called ‘Neerodi’. On the side of the box, there are few small holes called as ‘Serodi’

The Neerodi can be closed / opened by a ‘Kuzhavi Kal’ connected to an iron rod which passes through the horizontal bars.This will remain in closed position during storage time. When water needs to be opened for irrigation, the ‘Kuzhavi’ is lifted & water passes to the outlet pipe

The structure seen here is one of the significant places in the history of our freedom movement. Aranmanai Siruvayal is a small palace built by Chinna Marudhu as his headquarters. It is said that this had no doors so that any citizen can approach him. However..

Marudhu also fortified it knowing that sooner or later, the fight with the British was inevitable.He built a secret passage from the Kalayar Koil fort to this, collected weapons & stored it here.When the war with British broke out, this was the last line of defence for Marudhus

The palace was surrounded by British forces in the morning & Chinna Marudhu put up a valiant fight. Colonel Agnew who was the British commander swore that he will take his evening tea only after destroying this place. By evening it was captured & destroyed.
