Yesterday #TeamLossie joined their colleagues from:

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ @RoyalAirForce
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ @USMC
πŸ‡³πŸ‡± @Kon_Luchtmacht
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ @USAirForce

for a large scale training event known as Exercise Point Blank.

Here's what you need to know in your #PhoonFriday #MegaThread!

1/ #PointBlank
πŸ“… Exercise #PointBlank occurs several times a year, and enables the @RoyalAirForce and our @NATO allies to practise complex war-fighting scenarios involving more than 50 aircraft.

2/ #PointBlank
πŸŸ₯ #TeamLossie's role in this iteration of #PointBlank was to act as enemy forces, known as playing "Red Air".

We simulated the threats, tactics, and procedures of potential adversaries to create a realistic scenario for "Blue Air" - friendly forces.

3/ #PointBlank
πŸ†• This #PointBlank was particularly unusual as it involved @thef35 Lightning IIs from three different nations: the @RoyalAirForce, @USMC, and @Kon_Luchtmacht.

4/ #PointBlank
✈️ Sharing tactics, training, and procedures amongst allies makes us a more effective fighting force.

#PointBlank strengthens relationships within @NATO so that if a conflict was to arise, the Alliance would be best prepared for any eventuality.

5/ #PointBlank
❓ Who was involved?

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ From the @RoyalAirForce:
πŸ”΄ #TeamLossie @Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4s
🟣 A330-200 Multi-Role Tanker Transport Voyagers from @RAFBrizeNorton
πŸ”΅ @thef35 Lightning IIs from @RAF_Marham

6/ #PointBlank
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ From the @USAirForce:
πŸ”΅ F-15Es from @48FighterWing
πŸ”΅ F-16s from @AirAviano
🟣 KC-135s from @RAFMildenhall
πŸ”΅ B-52s from @TeamMinot, operating from RAF Fairford.

7/ #PointBlank
πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ From the @USMC:
πŸ”΅ @thef35 Lightning II from Marine Attack Squadron 211 (VMFA-211) flying out of @RAF_Marham

πŸ‡³πŸ‡± From @Kon_Luchtmacht (Royal Netherlands Air Force):
πŸ”΅ @thef35 Lightning II and
πŸ”΅ F-16s from Vliegbasis Leeuwarden (Leeuwarden Air Base)

8/ #PointBlank
As an added bonus, here's a short video of the #TeamLossie @Eurofighter Typhoons getting airborne from @Kinloss_Bks for the sortie!

Huge thanks as always to our @RAFPhotog team.

Images & video from Kinloss were taken by Sgt Ashley Keates and SAC Ciaran McFalls

#TeamLossie has had a busy Saturday!

🚨 We were scrambled earlier this morning as two Russian Tu-142 Bear F aircraft approached UK airspace. It was a rather unusual scramble for the @RoyalAirForce, and we're going to tell you all about it...

1/ #QRA ImageImageImageImage
❓ What happened?

πŸ“‘ The Control & Reporting Centre at @rafboulmer was alerted to two tracks heading towards UK airspace. The team of surveillance operators were tracking the two aircraft at all times alongside their @NATO counterparts.

2/ #QRA Image
All of this activity was coordinated through the @NATO Combined Air Operations Centre (known as a CAOC) in Uedem, Germany. They are also monitored by the National Air and Space Operations Centre (known as the NASOC) at
@RAFHighWycombe.

Have you ever wondered how we know when unidentified aircraft approach UK airspace?

This week's #PhoonFriday is looking at some of the smaller @RoyalAirForce units dotted around Scotland that directly support our Quick Reaction Alert mission.

#SupportingQRA 1/7
Did you know there are three Remote Radar Heads in Scotland?

πŸ“‘ Benbecula, in the Outer Hebrides
πŸ“‘ Saxa Vord, in the Shetlands
πŸ“‘ Buchan, on the Aberdeenshire coast

#SupportingQRA 2/7
In simplistic terms, radars send energy into the skies.

If the energy hits an object in the air such as an aircraft, it 'bounces back'.

The positions of all objects in the air are then plotted automatically and fed back into an overall picture for the UK.

#OnThisDay in 1943, 617 Squadron departed @RAFScampton on Operation Chastise - an audacious bombing raid that is still talked about to this day.

Here's your Saturday #MegaThread to explain it all πŸ‘‡

#OpChastise 1/10 ImageImageImageImage
Before we begin, Operation Chastise in numbers:

πŸ•°οΈ Departed @RAFScampton @ 21:28, 16 May 1943
⚑ Primary targets: 3 dams in the Ruhr valley
✈️ 19 Avro Lancaster bombers
πŸ‘¨ 133 airmen from πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ Britain, πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ Canada, πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί Australia, πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ New Zealand, πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ United States

#OpChastise 2/10 Image
The plan was to destroy three dams in the Ruhr valley.

The MΓΆhne, Eder and Sorpe dams were valuable sources of hydroelectric power in the German heartland, and it was thought that their destruction would cause significant disruption to war production.

Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons from #TeamLossie, along with QRA from our @NATO allies launched today to intercept two Russian Tu-142 'BEAR-F' aircraft that approached the UK and NATO's area of interest.

Here's what you need to know in our QRA mega-thread πŸ‘‡

#QRA 1/14
🚨 Unidentified aircraft were detected as they approached @NATO's area of interest.

Norwegian QRA scrambled F-16s to intercept. They ID'd two Russian Tu-142s.

#TeamLossie QRA Typhoons scrambled soon after as the Tu-142s tracked south towards the North Sea.

#QRA 2/14
The Russian BEAR-F operated around the North Sea for some time, before returning north. They were met by Norwegian F-35s, who continued shadowing them until they left @NATO's area of interest.

We've had a number of questions about why some of our major infrastructure projects are continuing at RAF Lossiemouth.

We hope to answer your questions, and alleviate your concerns in this thread πŸ‘‡
πŸ›‘οΈ The construction of our Poseidon Strategic Facility, along with the resurfacing of our runways and operating surfaces, have been categorised as Critical National Infrastructure by @GOVUK.
✈️ Runways and aircraft operating surfaces have a finite lifespan. Works must be completed on time to ensure RAF Lossiemouth's vital Defence Tasks can continue, namely:

Quick Reaction Alert (Interceptor) North
Maritime Patrol Operations
