Let me explain some economics for the benefit of those who think high food prices are a result of "poor ease of doing business"

Last year, one congo of garri was sold wholesale for N80. This year it is hovering between N200 and N300

Does it mean business was easier to do in
Nigeria last year?

Of course not. The business climate has hardly improved over the last 12 months.

Business doesn't perceptibly improve that way.

It usually takes decades for business policy innovation to exhibit appreciable improvement

Why did food prices surge this year?
The covid-19 pandemic critically reduced the supply of food due to the economic shutdown that kept farmers, wholesalers, distributors, retailers and consumers at home

The shutdown also affected global shipping and meant that our usual food imports weren't able to get to Nigeria
Even though global trade has resumed, the damage done to supply chains and jobs is already done.

Food prices have gone up especially for countries that rely on importation for survival.

Low oil prices means that our capacity to import has been devastated

Therefore no amount
of "ease of doing business" will lower the cost of food in the short term.

To add salt to the injury, the weather this year has been terrible.

2 months of drought in southern Nigeria and flooding all over the food belt of the North means that our food supply has been gravely
affected.

Therefore supply is low, and demand is high. This leads to plenty of money chasing few goods, and which leads to inflation.

Because prices take longer to come down than they do to go up, it means that a return to normal of production will leave a huge arbitrage gap in
profits for smart investors.

Now is the time to enter production and processing.

Those who remain complaining and griping about the govt and politics will remain left behind

We will overcome this challenge

And when we do, some of us will have made a tidy profit, with capacity
to take on bigger projects while the others will stay complaining and processing their immigrant visas to Canada.

The time to profit isn't when everything is calm and peaceful but during the most challenging times.

That is the best time to grow.

Growth isn't easy or tranquil
Growth is painful

You either grow or die

That's the mindset we need to adopt to put our country in shape

When production meets demand, prices will drop. The millionaires & billionaires will have been created

Which side will you be on?

The complainers or the billionaires?

I want to talk about soybeans this morning.

I will highlight the biggest impediment to livestock farming in Nigeria today

Many of us are ignorant about what makes an animal grow, and I will explain that right now

#Thread
The key to effectively feeding your animals in an intensive farming system, is the percentage of digestible crude protein (DCP) contained in their feed

Where livestock (poultry, and ruminants) are raised in a free range manner, they get their DCP from foraging on the ground
Chickens eat all sorts of things from leaves, to stones, crumbs and grains to make up for their protein needs.

The major nutrients needed for animal growth are proteins and carbohydrates.

CARBOHYDRATES are the source of energy in animals, while PROTEINS are the source of growth

Snail slime is big business in Thailand

"Kitpong sells the serum under the Acha brand, but also supplies Korean & American cosmetic companies with a dried powder at 1.8 million baht ($58,200) per kg, he said

Gold is currently worth $46,300 a kilogram"

punchng.com/farmers-make-c…
The precious slime is patiently "milked” from the glands of the snail by dripping water over it using a pipette

Its raw form is sold to Aden International, a Thai - based cosmetics company that primarily ships its products to Korea & the US
An opportunity exists for Nigerian entrepreneurs to act as offtakers of snail slime from farmers, while processing, drying, powdering and exporting to international cosmetics manufacturers

How can egg farmers best secure their investments for the long term?

By coming together in each state to set up a large offtaker for their produce.

What will be the job of an offtaker?

1. Invest in logistical capacity to collect eggs from several farms every week
2. Sort, clean, and supply eggs to retailers & consumers in the state and environs

3. Collate research about market indices

4. Standardize acceptable output, payment, dispute resolution, & other metrics in the industry

5. Look towards further processing of eggs to raise value
How can such an offtaker be created?

1. 50 egg farmers with capacity of 500 crates per week & above, should contribute 50k each to raise N2.5m which they will use for the following:

a. Rent a warehouse to receive supplies
b. Register a commercial outfit
c. Hire a manager

When I first moved back to ipele, I used to wonder how market prices were arrived at in rural markets

It didn't seem scientific or according to pure economic theory of supply & demand

It appeared like buyers just fixed prices arbitrarily

Now I know better

Here's what happens
Buyers arrive on market day

Sellers individual offer high prices of their goods

If they notice its being bought at that price, the next person raises their own price, and so on

But if no one buys at the high price, they go lower bit by bit

Until they refuse to go any lower
Buyers rush the goods on offer when they discover its very limited in quantity,

And they become coy when they notice it is abundant

In the same way, sellers are eager to drop prices when they notice buyers are few, and also do "shakara" when they are many

At the moment, only sesame can compete with the product in the market

Ten 170kg bags of egusi will give a farmer between N900,000 and N1.1 million under the current market price depending on the market location.

allafrica.com/stories/201902…
1 hectare of land will produce a minimum of 1 ton of peeled egusi seeds.
Egusi takes only 3 months to mature.

Plant one hectare today and test the results.

After harvesting:

1. Crack the melon slightly with a cutlass
2. Leave to ferment for a week or 2
3. Scoop out seeds and rinse away the mulch
4. Dry the seeds
5. Shell the seeds (with a machine)

As an entrepreneur, the first thing you must be aware of is that your staff will steal from you.

I don't care if they are on sabbatical from heaven, or if they know how to recite all the Holy Books from back to back.

If they have the slightest opportunity, they will fleece you
I was a bit depressed overnight, after an episode on the farm, but whole chatting with a Chinese associate, she mentioned that stealing is her number one problem as a manager (even in China!).

All humans will steal.

Be prepared for it, and put measures in place to curb it.
I'm no longer enraged when I hear of Indians, Lebanese & Chinese that treat our people like animals when they employ them

Allow a human being the slightest space & they will loot your business to death

Never trust anyone

Set the staff against each other

Gather information
