BREAKING: Nicola Sturgeon announces circuit breaker lockdown in Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 for 16 days:

▪️Pubs/restaurants/cafes can only open 6am-6pm indoors
▪️They can only serve alcohol outdoors
▪️Weddings, funerals, and 'life events' exempt

In Central Belt, restrictions even stricter.
This is a significant tightening of restrictions and sounds similar to measures the UK government is considering for northern England, according to @Peston. Where Scotland goes on Covid-19, England often follows...
Nicola Sturgeon says these are "short sharp" measures and intended to be temporary. But without them, she predicts the virus will spiral "out of control" by the end of this month.
The @CBI not happy:

“Hospitality, leisure and tourism firms will rightly be frustrated at this decision...With many pubs, cafes & restaurants only just getting back on their feet, there is no doubt this latest round of measures will put more jobs and businesses at serious risk.”

NEW: Analysis by Labour finds that 19 out of 20 areas with local lockdown restrictions in England have actually seen cases rise since those restrictions were imposed.

Comes as Keir Starmer questions why the measures don’t appear to be working at #PMQs.
Some stark examples:

- Bolton has seen cases increase almost 13 times from 20 to 255 per 100k.

- Burnley has seen cases increase over 20 times from 21 to 434 per 100k.

- Bury has seen its cases increase over 13 times from 20 to 266 per 100k.

Is local lockdown working?
What’s even more fascinating is that the Welsh Government just released this slide showing cases in areas of local lockdown in Wales are FALLING.

Why the difference in England?

🔥BREAKING: Tory MP @CrispinBlunt has called for Equalities Minister @trussliz to be sacked.

"It is clear that the Equalities Minister does not have the time or necessary empathy to continue in this role".

Extraordinary for a Tory MP to call for the sacking of a Tory minister.
It all follows a bitter exchange in the Commons earlier, following the government's response to the consultation on the Gender Recognition Act. This week the govt decided not to make it easier for someone to legally change their gender, much to the anger of some liberal Tory MPs.
🔥Crispin Blunt continues blisteringly, "Her characterisation of this as a clash of competing rights betrays a fatal misunderstanding... On equalities, her approach has been didactic and suggestive of someone who has a set view."

PM blames the rise in Covid cases on people breaking the rules:

"There have been too many breaches – too many opportunities for our invisible enemy to slip through undetected."
Individuals doing whatever they want puts other lives at risk, says PM.

"These risks are not our own. The tragic reality of having covid is that your mild cough can be someone else’s death knell."
PM trashes the idea we should just isolate the elderly/vulnerable.

"I must tell you that this is just not realistic, because if you let the virus rip through the rest of the population it would inevitably find its way through to the elderly as well, and in much greater numbers."

EXCLUSIVE: Care homes were used as a "dumping ground" at the start of the pandemic, according to NHS whistleblowers we've spoken to.

Govt has always denied large numbers of patients were discharged from hospitals into homes without testing, but these men took up to 200 each.
Our 3 whistleblowers work in patient transport and claim many patients clearly had Covid symptoms.

"Some of them you could tell if they were sweating, if there was coughing. And when we'd get to the nursing homes they'd say 'Are they positive?' and we'd say 'I don't know'."
Data we've been leaked from an NHS trust one of our whistleblowers works for shows the percentage of discharges into homes doubled from mid-March to April.

"There was pressure to get them out...I have to look at it that they threw the elderly to one side."

Sir Patrick Vallance says there is a “simple message from this slide” showing what’s happening in Spain and France.

“As the disease spreads, we expect to see increase in hospitalisations and unfortunately an increase in deaths.”
Next slide shows an increase in cases among all age groups.

“Could that increase be due to an increase in testing? The answer is no”, says Vallance. Positive cases are also rising as a proportion of all tests.

Around 6,000 people a day are becoming infected.
“I’d like to remind you how quickly this can move”, says Vallance.

This slide shows that if the virus continues to double every seven days then by 13th October there would be 49,000 new cases per day. Which would lead to 200+ deaths per day by November.
