[Current Outlook]
Very grim. The 3rd wave, most likely due to Ashura ceremonies, has created a synchronised widespread wave across the country which has completely overwhelmed the medical system. This is WAY worse than the 1st and 2nd wave.
According to the official numbers today we had 251, a record number of daily deaths due to COVID. The number does not look high but you need to bear in mind this is only PCR+ cases which results in massive underreporting due to COVID test kit shortage.
The situation in Tehran (9M) is super critical with half of deaths from this city.
Officials yesterday BANNDED hospitals from admitting any non-urgent non-COVID case.
Qom (1.2M), the original epicentre, is in a critical situation with number of hospitalised cases at 779 - arguably all-time high. The number was higher during the 1st wave but admission protocols have changed ever since.
Gilan (2.5M) and Mazandaran (3M) provinces in the north had been pretty much spared during the 3rd phase but have started to show a modest rise in the number of cases. It appears previous high infection rate especially in Gilan have been providing some levels of protection.
Whether this can be taken as an evidence for Herd Immunity, I very much doubt.
It is clear [to me] that long-term Herd Immunity cannot be achieved with this virus, although with a very high infection rate, a short-term one could be possible albeit with a high casualty.
A high number of officials have been struck with the virus now including Dr. Salehi, Iran's Atomic Agency chief and Dr. Nobakht, special advisor to the president.
In W Azerbaijan (3M), more and more hospitals are being allocated to patients with COVID. This north western province has had a terrible 2nd and 3rd wave.
I will leave you on a positive note: Narges Mohammadi, a prominent social activist in Iran has been freed from prison after 8.5 years of her 10 year sentence.
There are still many more activists in prison. Stay safe.
Before I start the usual coverage, with a heavy heart, have to have a brief report on #NavidAfkari, the executed prisoner in Iran which has caused an International outcry.
Navid Afkari along with his two brothers were arrested in late summer 2018 allegedly during protests but then later charged with killing of an IRGC Baseej member.
There are so much that can be said about inconsistencies around his case, sham TV interview, tortures he suffered and the fact that there is more evidence to show that he died under torture and not executed. But in his last words, he would like you to know this:
