I’m so so so delighted that this piece: #bropenscience is Broken Science is published. I am so proud of it.

Here’s a little thread about how @o_guest and I wrote the article. (Spoiler: what you’re reading is the third complete restructure) 🌺🌸
Last year @abrookmanbyrne, deputy editor @psychmag, reached out to @o_guest to ask her if she was interested in writing about the history of the wonderful #bropenscience pun that Olivia had created back in 2017.
Olivia gave it a first pass but writing an article about the genesis of a pun on Twitter felt.... thin. And a bit petty.

It’s something that folks ask for a lot, but it was hard to capture the irreverence of #bropenscience AND the huge power dynamics it draws attention to.
I offered to give the #bropenscience article a go. I’ve been so frustrated with bro culture in #OpenScience for many years - as my dear friends and colleagues know from tearful, angry phone rants after I’ve felt undermined and dismissed in online and IRL spaces.
Side note - THANK YOU TO THOSE FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES AAAAAAAAH - I don’t think they really know how much of my current career direction is due to them reminding me that 1) I can put some of the battles down, and 2) I can step back when I need to. #bropenscience
I thought about the content for a long time, procrastinated on actually starting and then one weekend - actually while my boyfriend was running his first 50 mile race 😱 - I sat down to write a first draft. #bropenscience
I made HUGE progress that day. I didn’t have a full draft for a few more weeks to share with @o_guest but I did eventually. She asked for a zoom call to discuss (never a great sign 😉) #bropenscience
In that call - the first time that I had ever even seen @o_guest (we’ve been twitter friends for years but still not ever met) - we discussed what the purpose of the piece was, and what we wanted to achieve. #bropenscience
I’m so grateful to @o_guest for that conversation. We realised together that I’d written that first draft for the bros. Everything I included was designed to try to convince the people who had always denied that there was a problem. #bropenscience
I’d gone back to the civil rights movement, women’s suffrage (bread 🍞 & roses 🌹), disability rights and intersectionality. It was.... a lot to link back to a twitter hashtag #bropenscience

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bread_and…
It was also kinda outside of my lane. I’m white, cis, English speaking and have had a privileged education. The article had tonnes of citations to descriptions of #StructuralOppression.... but it wasn’t broadly accessible. I was focusing my energy on the #bros. #bropenscience
Olivia asked: who did I want to benefit from the article?

My answer: Me of my phd & postdoc years. Where I felt like I knew nothing, was failing at everything, that there were these clear gateways that you had to pass through to be a programmer / open scientist.

#bropenscience
I want people like me of the past to feel seen. To feel welcome. To feel less alone.

And that’s when we created this draft of the paper. I am so delighted with it.

#bropenscience
I might go through a bit of the content in another thread, and I certainly need to tag all the folks who gave us feedback on this draft. But I also have to get to work.

tl;dr THANK YOU @o_guest

Thank you for working with me to find my voice in this paper. #bropenscience
Thank you too - OMFG thank you @o_guest - for making me laugh and for all the puns.

#broblems
#broposed solutions

😂😂😂

You probably already follow @o_guest. If you don’t, click that big ol’ button now.

But - more importantly - follow the folks she RTs and promotes. She a fantastic pathway to broadening your (and my) academic network to find those voices who aren’t usually heard. #bropenscience

This is going to be my first remotely attended conference!! I’ve been working my butt off since #COVID19 started & I haven’t previously made the space to properly attend talks, network and learn with my colleagues and peers. #JupyterCon2020 here we come!!
I’m curious to know where folks are hanging out. I think there’s a @Mattermost space to join, there’s the #JupyterCon2020 hashtag here, but let me know where you’re finding the most interesting discussions! I want to be listening in! 💁🏼‍♀️
I know I’m also about 6 months late to this discussion, but I’m curious to know how folks are balancing learning new content with brainstorming and being creative at conferences. If I were at #JupyterCon2020 IRL I would probably only attend the keynotes and one or two talks 1/

I’m hanging on the couch with a coffee and I want to tell you about some recently merged work that @MalvikaSharan and I have been considering for many months: how to best acknowledge contributors to @turingway. the-turing-way.netlify.app/community-hand… #AcknowledgeAllTheWork
You’ll know that we’re super into #Diverse and #Inclusive communities at @turingway. We really want everyone to leave feeling empowered and like they contributed in whatever way they were able. We’re here to support learning in all directions. #AcknowledgeAllTheWork
But there are also risks to the project if we do NOT build that inclusive atmosphere. If someone writes a chapter and then others are uncertain about whether they can / should edit it, we can’t benefit from the readers seeing how the work can be improved #AcknowledgeAllTheWork

Last twitter thread for this job with me, @AutisticaUK & @turinginst! Because the deadline is THURSDAY 17 JAN! Just two days to get your application in 😱🤗🤩

I’m going to give you my opinions on how to write a good cover letter. I hope they’re helpful!

turing.ac.uk/work-turing/re…
Let’s start by saying these are only my opinions. I’ll justify them so I hope they make sense to you. But different selection committees will have different requirements. Don’t over generalise to different positions :)
Here’s a screenshot of the application procedure from the job ad. It asks for a CV, contact details of your referees, and a covering letter.

Not much, right?

I think this makes the application pretty freaking hard! Let me explain why.

What’s that you say? I haven’t tweeted in a few days about this AMAZING JOB w @AutisticaUK & @turinginst that I’d love for you to apply for or share with anyone you know?

GO ON THEN. A thread about our values and project outcomes! 🌟🙌🏿🙌🏾👩🏻‍💻👩🏿‍💻👨🏼‍💻👨🏾‍💻😬🥰💖🥳

turing.ac.uk/work-turing/re…
The values are attached as a pdf to the job description linked above. Here’s the direct link: turing.ac.uk/sites/default/…

Before I dig into them I want to give a quick shout out to Georgia Aitkenhead who wrote the first draft based on our long conversations. THANK YOU Georgia!
The values are only loosely ordered. Don’t read too much into which ones come first etc. They’re ALL important.

When you apply for the job PLEASE address the values in your cover letter. It’s an essential requirement that you have a commitment to these values.

Great question from @pandamakes about the @AutisticaUK @turinginst #ResearchAssociate JOB that you should all be applying for (and telling your friends about). turing.ac.uk/work-turing/re…

I'm going to answer it in a little thread 👇🏼
What do I mean by a "fine-grained consent model"? At the highest level it's pretty simple: it means I want to give all the participants control over their data.

What does that mean in practise?
In this #CitizenScience project we'll be collecting experiences about the challenges that #Autistic people have when navigate the environment.

For example, is it very stressful to take the tube? (Yes!) Are there times that are particularly bad? (Yes!) What are the workarounds?
