[Thread] There has been alot of assumptions and misinformation about racial demographics of #PortlandProtests, as well as right wing propaganda claiming "violence" is being allowed by the DA. First I'll address race...
/In this very white city, only 6% percent of Portland is Black, but 10% of arrestees are black. Portland Police have also been labeling POC as white. This means that even at protests against racist policing, black people are disproportionately impacted.
/ This also shows there aren't a lack of black folks protesting nightly. 75% of charges are for things that have nothing to do with property damage or violence. This means cops are mainly arresting people for protesting (calling it interfering, disorderly or failure to obey).
/ About 120 cases aren't being prosecuted because cops didn't have evidence, legal impediments or lack of follow up from police. 128 cases are being prosecuted, 182 are under review & a little more than half have been dropped outright so resources can be used for actual crime.
/ Another note, is the protests are being framed as violent. Legally, property crimes are considered "nonviolent crimes" and person crimes are considered violent. 167 out of over 1200 crimes were person and many assaults that occurred were not by activists, but on activists.
/ There have seen 100s of injuries/hospitalizations caused by police on mostly people arrested for being present. I rarely have seen targeted arrests of those committing crimes. I bet most of those arrests are happening at peoples houses.
