Currently in North Carolina, end of year tests are pretty much the sole yardstick of teacher and school effectiveness as they are gauged in school report card grades and educator value-added measures (EVAAS).
That approach--which in North Carolina is held in place by pro-voucher and pro-privatization legislators who benefit from the narrative of failing schools--encourages teachers to focus narrowly on test mastery and is terrible for student motivation and actual learning.
I spent some time earlier this year (before COVID) with some really smart educators brainstorming what accountability *could* look like.
Imagine a system where we evaluate effectiveness through a broader system of measures that may include some test data but also data from things like parent/student surveys on teacher performance and classroom culture, teacher retention numbers, etc.
We would have a much more comprehensive and (IMHO) accurate picture of what is going on inside that school.
Hopefully if we can unelect enough privatizers next month and put a teacher in charge of the Department of Education we can start changing some of these harmful systems. #nced #ncpol #ncga
