I wish people would talk about why the #ACA wasn't able to have it's full reach. That at every step of the way, it was sabotaged by people who didn't want it to be successful. (A thread) @BarackObama@JoeBiden@FutureDocs
By forcing the removal of the #PublicOption from the outset, there was no low-cost plan that commercial insurers would have to compete against. Read - they charge more #mypremiumsarehigh
By denying constituents #MedicaidExpansion, governors and state legislatures forced people to go w/o insurance and screenings (out of spite) In fact, they would have qualified for free Medicaid and coverage. They yelled, "See how hight your premiums are!" But go ahead, blame #ACA
Read about how #alabamans were left without insurance and saw increases in cervical cancer and how patients were surprised to learn that the #ACA had made provisions for people like them to have healthcare, if only they lived across state lines. newyorker.com/magazine/2020/…
Then by striking down the #individualmandate (i'm talking to you @Scotus ), the mixed pool of insured people which includes healthier people, was decreased to a pool of less healthy people --> rates increase for everyone because there's no #costsharing
And now, the #OrangeIdiot is in court fighting #PreExistingConditions and lying about protecting them. The reason why they are covered under the #ACA is that insurers have incentives (more insured people, access to markets, etc) to cover them. No #ACA = No Protections
1. I have a couple of thoughts about this. The classification of "culturally appropriateness" in terms of attire, holding alcohol, and #MedBikini shows a single world-view can skew results and demonstrates the importance of diversity.
2. My main issue is the classification of physicians commenting on political and social issues as unprofessional. I disagree. It is exactly because physicians have remained silent for so long on topics such as abortion and gun control, that we are in this political battle
3. Our silence has created the space for non-science to occupy and drive the conversation. Our silence is the reason why a legislator in Ohio could bring forth a bill where an #obgyn would be liable for not re-implanting an ectopic gestation and could be prosecuted for murder.
