Would @markmeadows say “we are not going to control a war” & let soldiers die?
We aren’t going to control flooding, & let families drown?
Not to respond to a blizzard or fire, & let Americans freeze or burn?
Unacceptable dereliction of duty not to do what we can to save lives.
It’s mourning in America: 224,819 dead. Coronavirus is spreading rapidly. ICUs filling up.
Governors need to act now to #flattenthecurve: covidactnow.org
If we don’t, hospitals will be overwhelmed, & more people will die.
Mandate masks. They work: cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…
Just imagine:
“We’re not going to control the winter”-CoS to Washington, 1777
“We’re not going to control the Depression”-Chief of Staff (CoS) to FDR, 1933
“We’re not going to control the smog”-CoS to @JerryBrownGov, 1974
“Don’t ask what your country can do.”-CoS to JFK, 1962
“Even though large tracts of Europe many old & famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the coronavirus & all the odious consequences of COVID-19, we shall flag & fail. We won’t go on to the end, we shall surrender…” smithsonianmag.com/history/winsto…
1) @Twitter & @Facebook don’t have to host speech that misinforms Americans about the risk of a deadly virus: washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/… They could mask it with facts first. 2) Americans need & deserve so much better from a @POTUS:
Twitter has now masked Trump’s tweet & explained why (it violated rules about spreading misleading & potentially harmful information related to #COVID19”) but also *removed* a tweet.
Alternate POTUS:
Tens of thousands of Americans die from the flu every year. Please get your shot: flu.gov
One day, we will have a vaccine for #COVID19, but not yet: please wear a mask & follow @cdcgov guidance to protect the vulnerable. Every life is precious.
#COVID19 is the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA, behind heart disease & cancer usafacts.org/articles/top-c…
The @CDCDirector says if we all wear a mask, it will save lives.
If we don’t, COVID19 could be the leading cause of death in America by Christmas.
Be a patriot: mask up!
Most young people may live, but some won’t. Others have long-term effects: theatlantic.com/health/archive… The older & sicker Americans are, the more likely COVID19 will take them. We must protect vulnerable.
Masks are the key way to prevent this deadly airborne disease from spreading.
So far this morning, ministers and civil society representatives to this virtual #opengov summit aren't talking much about what's happened in the USA, the state of its participation, or what it means to @opengovpart. Probably easier & safer not to do so.
@opengovpart Would be good to see ministers, @HelenClarkNZ, & #opengov leaders grapple more with deliberate undermining of trust in government, election integrity, & the press by autocrats, from Hungary to Turkey to Russia to the USA, & share what works to mitigate or reverse it #OpenResponse
“Well-supported arguments…have made the case that Trump fits the diagnostic criteria for psychopathy & narcissism. Either disorder, by its medical definition, would render him all but incapable of accepting defeat. Conventional commentary has trouble facing this issue squarely.”
Trump “is discrediting” mail-in voting, “starving it of resources, signaling his supporters to vote in person, & preparing the ground for post–Election Night plans to contest the results. It is the strategy of a man who expects to be outvoted & means to hobble the count.” 🚨🚨🚨
“Close students of election law and procedure are warning that conditions are ripe for a constitutional crisis that would leave the nation without an authoritative result. We have no fail-safe against that calamity. Thus the🚨”-@bartongellmantheatlantic.com/magazine/archi…
Mourning Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg: washingtonpost.com/local/obituari…
Before her distinguished career as a jurist, the legal pioneer led a team of @ACLU lawyers that established our constitutional guarantee of equal protection applied to women.
RIP, RBG.
Your legacy & light lives on.
I stopped by the Supreme Court to pay my respects to Justice Ginsberg & see how she was being honored & remembered, but kept my distance. There are hundreds of Washingtonians quietly moving around the plaza, mostly masked, reading messages on a cool, crisp fall day.
“Born the year Eleanor Roosevelt became First Lady, Ginsburg bore witness to, argued for, & helped to constitutionalize the most hard-fought and least-appreciated revolution in modern American history: the emancipation of women.”-Jill Lepore newyorker.com/news/postscrip…
