Amy Coney Barrett is about to be confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice. There was nothing about this process that was normal. We can’t act like it was. THREAD

#WeDissent #RuthsRevolution #CourtsMatter #NotNormal
It is not normal to announce support for a Supreme Court justice nominee before anyone has been named.
It is not normal to move forward with a nominee before the previous justice was buried.
It is not normal for senators to so callously and blatantly reverse the precedent they set in 2016 by pushing through a new Supreme Court justice within months of a presidential election.
It is not normal for a president to outsource judicial nominees, including to the Supreme Court, to outside extremist groups like the Federalist Society.
It is not normal for a nominee to rush through their Senate Judiciary Committee questionnaire and return it only 24 hours later.
It is not normal to be nominated to the highest court in the land with so little experience.
It is not normal to be nominated to the highest court when you have a history of any form of judicial activism.
It is not normal for a judge to openly declare they would prioritize their religious beliefs over precedent and still move through the committee process.
It is not normal to vote on a nominee before the full hearing was complete.
It is not normal to break the rules to hold a procedural vote without at least two members from the minority party present.
It is not normal to break the rules again and hold a vote to move a nominee to the Senate floor without the participation and presence of anyone from the minority party.
It is not normal for the Senate Judiciary Committee to rush through a process, without attempting to gain all of the information on the nominee’s background, for lifetime tenure for the most prestigious position in our nation.
It is not normal for a person who recently spent time with 5 people diagnosed with COVID, to preside over this vote in a closed chamber.
It is not normal for lawmakers to focus on a Supreme Court nominee instead of the 220,000 people who have died from a health pandemic that is still plaguing us.
It is not normal to rush through a nominee as over 60 million people have already cast their ballots and Election Day is only 8 days away.
There was nothing about this process that was normal. We can’t act like it was. This is the highest court in our nation with the final word on our rights.

The World Zionist Congress, which has the power to allocate a billion dollars in money annually in Israel, has been ablaze with major issues around voice & power this week. Here’s a thread summing up the drama & implications between the progressive and right wing voting blocks.
TL;DR: Right wing groups banded together and have the majority numbers so they decided to propose to change the rules and make it so that progressive groups can’t vote on certain leadership positions or influence particular money. #wzc2020
That billion dollars impacts every aspect of Israeli society & global Jewish life, whether you are talking about gender equity, LGBTQ equality, the occupation, religious pluralism, or economic justice. The decisions here will impact women and families in the short and long term.

I’m a fan of @Daroff, too. But quoting only men and referring to William as the King of Twitter and Malcolm as King of the Jews, without even acknowledging gender as one of the primary issues for @Conf_of_Pres to navigate is not okay. @OmriNahmias m.jpost.com/Diaspora/Who-i…
Just as a reminder, when Michael Steinhardt sexually harassed me he continuously referred to himself as the King of Israel. Kings are not the model of leadership we should be aspiring towards. They are often known for abusing power and abusing women.
There are plenty of qualified women to comment on world events and Jewish leadership. @OmriNahmias, if you had asked us you would have learned that gender dynamics are a top issue that @Conf_of_Pres must deal with under @Daroff. And I’m eager to be a partner to him in that work.

On my way to my 1st ever @Conf_of_Pres meeting, which is focused on Anti-Semitism. COP brings together leaders of major Jewish orgs as a way to leverage impact in the US & Israel. What messages do you want me to share w/ this group? What issues do you wish we were addressing?
11/13 morning speakers are men, including all “experts”. I know plenty of experts on antisemitism who are women and will plan to share that with COP.
In the meantime, would love to see the men from the experts panel commit to only speaking on future panels that include women. @IrwinCotler @JGreenblattADL @DavidHarrisAJC, what do you say?
