Protesting police violence shouldn't result in threats of deportation, yet migrant-rights activist Máxima Guerrero was moved to ICE detention after May #BLM protests.

She feared contracting #COVID19, and what deportation would mean for her future.
theguardian.com/us-news/2020/o…
Máxima Guerrero was released from #ICE detention after intense backlash from the #Phoenix community but wore an ankle monitor until charges were dropped.

Uncertainty and fear linger: “I go through phases where I don’t want to talk about it all. There’s a continuous toll.” Caitlin O'Hara for The New York Times: Photo of Máxima Guer
Reporting by @Taniel with @TheAppeal details how the races in #Maricopa County and across the US impact cooperation with #ICE, and how the enforcement agency is easily crippled once they can no longer deputize local officers:
Phoenix PD declined to comment on specific protesters’ cases, but said those arrested “were involved in criminal activity.”

AZ law gives wide latitude to allege assault on officers, even with no injuries. “All you gotta do is sneeze wrong, and it’s ‘assault’,” @brucefranksjr.
These 30 prosecutor and sheriff elections, including 2 races in #Maricopa County, could determine whether or not protesters are locked up simply for exercising their right to criticize police violence and racism.

Through repeated threats to ignore election results, fabricated claims of fraud, and attacks on mail-in voting, Trump has telegraphed his plan to steal the election.

It is real, but we can stop it if we’re ready. A thread:

tjcinstitute.com/research/how-t…
A key piece of his plan is to malign and restrict mail-in voting via lawsuits and attacks on the post office that will cause delays. This is, first, voter suppression.

But it also sets Trump up to declare victory before counting all the votes.

washingtonpost.com/politics/rejec…
How? Biden voters are much likelier than Trump’s to vote by mail, and mail votes take longer to count.

So even if Trump appears to lead in some states on Nov 3, a “blue shift” may occur as mailed votes are counted, showing Biden to be the true winner.

Donald Trump has made clear he is ready to steal the election, and Republican leaders are ready to help him.

Writers @ZackMalitz, Brandon Evans, & Becky Bond tell us how he could do it and — more importantly — what we can do to stop him.

thenation.com/article/politi…
Trump’s plan hinges on falsely claiming victory on Nov. 3, claiming any ballots counted after then are fraudulent. He'll disrupt the ballot count through legal challenges and violence, followed by Republican-controlled legislatures trying to appoint fraudulent Trump electors.
As the authors write, “What we’re talking about is a coup. If all of this plays out, it will be spun as a fair and legal process, but it’s still a coup.” thenation.com/article/politi…

Democrats can and must do three key things to stop it:

This thread from @chrisgeidner about the scheduled federal execution of Wesley Purkey this evening is going to continue here at @Justice_Collab for now due to the current Twitter issues.
The second scheduled federal execution this week, Purkey's execution is currently on hold by two different district court injunctions. DOJ is appealing both to both the DC Circuit and the Supreme Court. Another appeal is pending from Purkey's lawyers at the Supreme Court.
For more on the first federal execution, which was supposed to take place on Monday but instead was carried out by DOJ on Tuesday morning, see @laurenk_gill's report about Daniel Lee's execution: theappeal.org/u-s-government…

AG Bill Barr made hypocritical statements this week about progressive prosecutors that are politicized and false. #BarrLies

Particularly in the midst of his other actions this week, these statements must be addressed. Those he’s attacked have done so: fairandjustprosecution.org/wp-content/upl…
Barr used Chicago as an example of cities with “progressive” prosecutors that “have all suffered historic levels of homicide and other violent crime.”

That was a lie. #BarrLies
Violent crime decreased by roughly 8% as State’s Attorney Kimm Foxx’s office reduced the number of people being sentenced to prison or jail by 19%.

The number of homicides and shootings have fallen for the 3rd consecutive year. #BarrLies

The Austin Firefighters Association called out DA Margaret Moore this week for her failures in handling sexual assault cases.

In a series of powerful videos, survivors recount how Moore mishandled their cases and personally mistreated them: kvue.com/article/news/l…
It’s the latest evidence that DA Moore is failing sexual assault survivors: eight have sued Moore in a class-action lawsuit, alleging gender discrimination and constitutional rights violations. austinchronicle.com/news/2019-03-1…
Moore has said that rape by an acquaintance doesn’t rise to the level of sexual assault - and that rape involving victims who had consumed alcohol or drugs shouldn’t be prosecuted as a criminal act: austinchronicle.com/news/2019-03-1…

The changing landscape for criminal justice in America has been front and center recently, from presidential candidates pledging to reduce mass incarceration to progressive prosecutors taking steps like ending marijuana prosecutions, ending reliance on cash bail, and more.
That movement continues in large and small cities and counties in the coming week, as prosecutors are up for election in many jurisdictions, as @Taniel detailed earlier today. theappeal.org/politicalrepor…
Races are happening all over, so see if there’s an election for prosecutor — or any office, because almost all offices have some role in our criminal justice system — that you’ll be voting for next week.
