1/ I say this often: power is people. It's the root of 'social constructionism' it's the validity of voting & the virtue of democracy
Power is people.
I bring this up because I hear the despair in Leftists' voices that the Democrats will let them down even if they win
2/ Biden will win because of demography. The number of non-white supremacists has risen to the point of gaining cultural force. Because power is people.
Until now, all power was held by structures set up to maintain a white male Christian hegemony.
3/ In 1992 the GOP, being the identity party of white grievance, saw white male Christian hegemony start to shake. Clinton was a poor white un-moneyed hillbilly ex-hippie but his wife was everything they feared about the 60s: female power. Female SCOTUS judge, female AG etc
4/ Black power followed as well, but Gingrich declared the start of the 3rd Civil War and made the House a tool of fascism, all in the name of enshrining minority rule. Our demography allowed him to do this without backlash.
5/ Youngins won't get how hard Clinton had to fight to get anything done with a virulent pro-white supremacy, pro-cruelty Congress
While I agree Bill was pliant in accepting GOP cruel policies (Crime Bill, ending welfare) I believe it came down to demography. Power is people.
6/ The more the white male Christian hegemony slipped, the more they fought to enshrine permanent minority rule. They kept getting away with it because of demography; there wasn't enough of us to topple their prison walls.
And when Obama was elected? Holy cow. They freaked
7/ I do believe the full hot war started after the GOP lost in '12 because that was utter proof that Obama was the face of the US future. He won Florida & Ohio twice, y'all
The GOP didn't change their plan because doing so meant losing their cherished identity (of minority hate)
8/ Power is people, though. It was bad enough in 2016 that the GOP knowingly conspired with Russia to declare war on the US: to topple the Black president's legacy, to prevent a woman from being powerful.
9/ The GOP saw their tactics work (2010! Gah!) & that enough people would help them obstruct and destroy a working government. How many 'liberals' and 'leftists' joined in attacking the Democrats for not doing enough while at the same time voting against them in 2000 & 2016
10/ The demographic razor's edge pushed the GOP over the finish line in '16 - w/a lot of help from Vlad, but even more from abusers on high in the media & business - to destroy a woman even more than they ever did to a Black man.
But in 2020 the demography is too much to ignore
11/ I believe that huge numbers in this election - even suppressed, even when votes are thrown away - will show the Democrats that they have the power. 1932 power. Because people are power.
That's why every vote counts. 'Run up the score' because all the cowards will see it too.
12/ Oligarchs, thieves of minority rule, are scared of demography (because, again, power is people). Money doesn't mean anything without people believing it. Business falls without people.
Our numbers will make them cower. Bill "Pennywise" Barr knows how powerful we are
13/ I'm GenX. I've been in favor of almost everything the far Left thinks the Dems are against. We just haven't had the numbers of people to get it done in our democracy
In fact, what has worried me the most about the far left is their commitment to minority rule in their favor
14/ Minority rule, even a benevolent one motivated by 'compassion', is unjust. Because not only is power from the people, moral value is from the people.
When the Dems win, please join me in imploring them to recognize the majority supports them.
17/ We don't have decent health care, wages, social services, public transportation b/c so many white supremacists controlled the power structures - supported whole heartedly by the RedHats of our history - who were happy to hurt themselves as long as their enemy was hurt too.
18/ We can end that tomorrow. Please vote Blue everyone. Our broken history from 1619 to now can begin an open path to repair. A history of slavery, genocide, cruelty - all in the name of greed & deluded supremacy
We can have a Black woman as #2 in the nation! A newer deal.
16.01/ There are some really promising signs. It's a good feeling that increasing the number of voters - without even knowing how they voted - is good for the Democrats. It's good for democracy and the "Democrat" party. Funny that
16.03/ Florida is a true toss-up because it's Florida and it's designed to be a god-awful mess. But I have a good feeling about Texas (and Georgia). A gooooooooooooood feeling about Texas
15.01/ From last night, about the newest COVID outbreak from within the White House. As I've said before, the core value of Pence/GOP is anti-expertise, which leads to their self-destruction
15.02/ #Steelers @ Titans is the game of the week and as the picture below shows, nearly everyone in the 50 states will get to see it except... me in Jersey. But I'll get to listen to the game on my laptop, 10-70 seconds behind (why?!) #HereWeGo
15.03/ @Dameshek is (basically) my age and we were both kids in Pittsburgh at the same time so we have the same abject fear of Mr. Yuk.
1/ People are defending Toobin?! Normally I wouldn't comment on something disgusting/NSFW but I've spent the last year immersed in the issue of gender safety & equity, in work-spaces & in communities, and this is a textbook case to unpack
And I'm a cishet man. I must speak up
2/ His behavior was not 'embarrassing,' it was unsafe. It's not normal; people are comparing it to going to the bathroom on zoom - nope. That's involuntary & necessary human behavior (and yet, can be unsafe if ppl expose themselves purposefully)
3/ Nobody unwilling can be forced to watch another person's sexual acts in a work or public space
The only positive spin on his behavior is that he's an addict & needs to enter recovery before he can be considered safe around others.
1/ Quick thread to bolster Blue confidence right now.
It's important to remember that the Democrats lost in 2016 by 80K votes spread through 3 states. Yet 2018 was a blue wave 40 seat House pickup, and red states elected blue governors.
2/ 2016, like 2000, had a poor candidate trying to get a 3rd term (always hard). HRC had super high negatives & Gore was just uninteresting. They then chose bland/disliked moderate VPs & that encouraged the liberal wing to either stay home or vote Green in protest.
3/ In contrast 2020 has a good candidate that people actually like, an Obama Democrat as it were, plus a woman of color who's relatively liberal. This is not the same election
And that's not even taking into account how horrifying everything is
14.01/ The alacrity & zeal of converting the house/kitchen from Pesadik to Chametzdik is in inverse proportion to the zeal in taking down the sukkah
14.02/ Given how often I need to use it during the #TrumpCrisis, I need to add "incompetent" to my list of words that I will never spell correctly when I first type it out.
1/ Earlier this week I had an exchange with a truculent rando that is typical for Twitter but I refuse to let it be.
He didn't agree with what I said, so he tried to hide his distaste as if it was an high-level intellectual matter but only by ignoring most of my words
2/ I know this is typical for online comments but why should that be so? He didn't engage with my words, willfully twisted the meaning, because ultimately he was assuming I did something wrong.
And even if I did... WHO CARES? Who cares if I'm wrong. It's a big world
3/ Bottom line: I'm in my 40s & I interact with people online as if (a) they were random encounters in real life, with names & faces, & as such I must initially treat them with courtesy & respect; (b) & if they are misbehaving, then online life allows me to block 'em & leave
