MANAGING NOSE BLEED AT HOME

Nose bleed also known as Epistaxis can be frightening as blood flows from one or both nostrils.

It can be heavy or light, lasting a few seconds to 15 minutes or more

Common causes of nosebleeds include:

-picking your nose
-blowing your nose very hard
-a minor injury to your nose
-trauma or accident
-changes in humidity or temperature causing the inside of the nose to become dry and cracked
Who is at risk of nosebleed?

-children between two & 10 years of age
-elderly people
-pregnant women
-people on blood thinners such as warfarin
-blood clotting disorders, such as haemophilia
Preventing nosebleeds

Things you can do to prevent nosebleeds include:

-avoid picking ur nose & keep ur fingernails short
-blow ur nose as little as possible & only very gently
-keep ur home humidified
-wear a head guard to avoid trauma
-avoid overusing nasal decongestants
How to stop a nosebleed yourself. You should:

-sit or stand upright (don't lie down)
-pinch ur nose just above your nostrils for 10 to 15 minutes
-lean forward & breathe through ur mouth
-place an icepack (or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a teatowel) at the top of your nose🙏🏽
When to seek medical advice

-the bleeding continues for longer than 20 minutes
-bleeding is heavy and u've lost a lot of blood
-u're having difficulty breathing
-u swallow a large amount of blood that makes u vomit
-the nosebleed developed after a serious injury, like car crash
