Very exciting to see 94% efficacy of @moderna_tx #SARSCoV2 vaccine at interim analysis of 95 events. This replication of Pfizer's high efficacy tells us the virus is eminently vaccinatable. investors.modernatx.com/news-releases/…
Before year's end we will have at least 2 vaccines with EUAs to proceed with Phase 1a rollout, a historic science achievement in < 12 months. For context:
The replication is independent. A separate Data & Safety monitoring board of Operation Warp Speed did the review. Yes, it's another mRNA vaccine, but it's the same target, the spike protein, shared by the other Phase 3 vaccine programs. They should all work well. We need them too
All the more reason to get hyper-aggressive with a virus out-of-control in the US right now. It is only a matter of months when we start to see this bleak picture turned around. Ultimately, covid-19 illness and fatalities will be largely preventable.
There's other good news today about @moderna_tx's vaccine. It won't require deep freeze (-70°C) logistics. It's stable for 30 days w/ refrigeration. Also this trial had better minority representation. There were 11 severe infections among endpoints, all in the placebo arm.

At a time when 22% of US hospitals have insufficient #healthcare frontline work force

It couldn't be a worse time for setting new records every day for covid hospitalizations. Today > 75,000, rising quickly.
@COVID19Tracking
In the span of just 7 days, there's been a 25% increase in hospitalizations, the worst increase we've seen to date Image

The good news is that the turnaround in Europe's 2nd wave has started, owing to aggressive mitigation action in many countries
But in the United States there is no sign of that whatsoever.
The response has been minimal to date, in select states. The only national plan is surrender

Every day a new record. A record of lack of will to take action, promote infections, hospitalizations, #LongCovid, and deaths in larger numbers of Americans.
150, 526 new infections today
67, 096 hospitalizations
1,104 deaths
A country positivity rate of 10.1%
@COVID19Tracking
Look at the ascension in hospitalizations, adding >10,000 in a week, surpassing the first 2 surges, and no limit is sight.
The cases are going vertical

These metrics today are off-the-chart horrendous.
Jumps like we've never seen in each category of new cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
It is *sickening* to see this level of spread and to know there is so much that can be done to mitigate it.
That doesn't require lockdowns. Targeted interventions with masks, distancing, crowd avoidance, selective closures.
Instead of watching and surrendering.
Progression to "uncontrolled spread" now in 48 states. It'll be 50 shortly. A country truly out of control, controlled by people @WhiteHouse who have no idea what they are doing.

Important new @nature paper today using 98 million people smartphone mobility data to detect🦠hotspots, track covid nationally, guide reopening potential

A digital, real-time dashboard for covid—mobility, vulnerability, and detection of outbreaks early, would be important to pursue. Such a dashboard is mentioned in the Biden-Harris covid plan, but w/o any details. Here's another new paper nature.com/articles/s4156… @NatureHumBehav
