All children need mirroring for healthy development. We #Autistics received very little.
Our talents were often not recognized or acknowledged. If they were, it was not for our benefit, but for yours.
Our faults were all noted and attributed to us alone. 3
Imagine our surprise when we found out that all the things YOU (#Neurotypicals) condemned in us were OUR greatest talents!
That you had projected your shortcomings onto US in your hurry to disavow YOUR own issues.
You say we cannot be what you can be and yet here we are. 4
How many times in a generation must it be relearned that everyone is just human and there are no natural divisions.
If we succeed in your #Neurotypical world we have EARNED our successes no matter our colour, creed, religion, socioeconomic status, nationality etc .5
The same arguments that were used against all marginalized groups throughout history continue to be used against us #Autistics right now.
And many of us belong to multiple minority groups, compounding our struggles. #Intersectionality 6.
But never is the thought that our ability to rise above all this, with/without #Accommodations, says something about OUR character OUR motivation OUR abilities OUR overcoming #Trauma#Discrimination etc.
Why are our accomplishments not admired & rewarded the same way as yours? 7
We still have to hide our true selves or risk judgement or worse.
#Autistic worth is unfairly equated to monetary productivity or care.
Perhaps this widespread #Prejudice should be worked through at all levels of society from individuals to families, professions, governments .8
Work through your #Prejudice so that we #Autistics & other #Neurodivergent people may finally be recognized as worthwhile members of an inclusive society - DIFFERENT but EQUAL and PROUD - without fear of disclosure and ostracism or far worse.
Thank you for listening. 9/9
