Dr. Jim Souza's answers right now are so raw. He worked in @StLukesHealth Boise COVID-19 ICUs this weekend (Yes, we now have multiple COVID ICUs) and saw first hand the death and sickness. He and @audreydutton are on until 10a.
(Someone's telling Dr. Souza he's "fear mongering, COVID-19 is fake." THE MAN WORKED IN THE ICUS THIS WEEKEND & SAW FOR HIMSELF THE PAIN COVID IS INFLICTING ON OUR COMMUNITY. Why should people believe "Spinner" over a physician living this? What more can we do? Truly. Tell us!)
"Be careful you don't mistake hospitals for a hotel." Dr. Souza warning about hospital capacity and all of the staff out sick with COVID-19 (140 today). "I can put people in beds, but who will care for them?"
On masks: "I'm way more interested in cooperation than compliance.... if we all work together... we're going to get through this and we're going to get through this without having to resort to Crisis Standards of Care." @StLukesHealth's Dr. Jim Souza.
Dr. Souza says COVID-19 stats right now (which are very inadequate) show it's at least 5 times more lethal than flu. But it's not just about mortality. The issue is morbidity, which is substantially worse and significantly impacting our hospitals...
He went on to explain we don't see this much ICU utilization from the flu, the long term significant health effects, or severe viral cardiac inflammation. We see those things from COVID19. "Morbidity" is what threatens our hospitals and their capacity for care for all conditions.

Before we all start prepping turkeys & making pies, I just want to take a moment to start a thread to share our collective thanks to all our @StLukesHealth #healthcareheroes who have our gratitude this Thanksgiving. If you would like, please add your own thanks in a comment. 💙 Image
THANK YOU to each COVID19 ICU Nurse who holds the hands of someone's loved one because their families can't be there, even when it's time to say goodbye. ImageImageImageImage
We are grateful to every single @StLukesHealth Environmental Services worker who takes care to clean COVID-19 rooms to ensure patients & staff are as safe as they can be, & to keep all areas in the hospital sanitized. ImageImageImageImage

To build on Dr. Jim Souza’s letter, he said I could share this video w/ you. During @leadershipboise Tues., @drpatesblog asked him about what’s ahead for him personally & for Idaho hospitals like @StLukesHealth as we face crisis levels. There wasn’t a dry eye when he was done.🧵
Part 1: “Our modeling predicts that in December we’re gonna be pushed to that brink... but regardless whether it’s December or January, it is beyond silly that we need to wait for that to occur in order to stop it. Have we learned nothing?” (9-11 example) @StLukesHealth #Covid19
2: “What are we going to do the day after crisis standards are implemented, sadly? We’re going to implement/enforce mandates. We can wait until after that horrible event happens or take action now, but I’m afraid it feels like we are going to need to be pushed to that brink.”

New thread just for Southwest District Health's Board meeting. @StLukesHealth was asked to come speak to the board and will around 9:55a:
OMG... "This is a scam!" People are shouting at SWDH Board meeting.
People are thanking the board for bringing in the "other side" and speakers with different views on #COVID19 because they're only hearing "one-sided" information from health care organizations. This is where we are folks. SCIENCE and evidence-based data is "one-sided"

Dr. Jim Souza provided @BoiseMayor facts about what’s happening at @StLukesHealth as #COVID19 spreads out of control in our community. Inpatient numbers steadily rising over 6 weeks. October: Daily average number of COVID+ patients = 35, then 50, 90, 110, 120, then 135 yesterday
2/ @StLukesHealth ICU COVID-19+ patients were in the single digits in October, then mid-teens, then up to 24 yesterday. That’s added on top of the usual operations as people get sick and need hospital care for other reasons.
3/ Our own @STlukeshealth caregivers are getting sick in the community and it’s impacting how much care we can provide. Dr. Souza told @BoiseMayor we have 197 clinical staff out sick, 133 confirmed COVID-19+.

.@BSDEducation Board is also happening now. @drkennybramwell from @StLukesHealth Children's will answer questions and provide information about #COVID19 and kids:
Since the reintroduced of secondary students, @BSDEducation says it has seen an uptick in positive rates among students and staff. They say it's to be expected when you have more people back on campuses, even part time.
.@BSDEducation says 550 elementary students are currently quarantining due to a COVID19 exposure and 507 secondary students are doing the same. It’s a small percentage, they say – less than 1%. It’s based on contact tracing efforts.

1/4 of @StLukesHealth Magic Valley patients are COVID19+. Twin Falls will consider ordinance mandating face coverings when in public places to try to slow outbreak. PLEASE help show support for this, as we're hearing of large protests against it planned.
tfid.org/514/Agendas-Mi…
16% of COVID-19 tests in Twin Falls County are coming back positive right now. At one point last week 52 people were hospitalized with COVID...in ONE hospital. @StLukesHealth is hoping the TFCC will look at the data/research and take action with masks. stlukesonline.org/health-service…
If you know people in Twin Falls, please have them submit their comments in support of face coverings ASAP by 12pm to be included before tonight's 5p meeting: forms.tfid.org/Forms/CouncilC… #WearAMask
