Here is our submission to the three-day OHCHR seminar on academic freedom we attended earlier this year. It highlights the key role of social media companies, rather than governments, in controlling online discourse, which impacts on academic freedom. ohchr.org/Documents/Issu…

“To a very large extent, our freedom of expression is controlled by corporate enterprises such as Google, Twitter, Facebook, Medium, and WordPress. These companies decide which information and ideas are permissible and which must be banished.”

Although the RationalWiki page on #LGBAlliance is no longer, as the submission states, the first item to appear when googling LGB Alliance, this page is still prominent and it is not possible to edit the page to correct the disinformation on it.

Welcome to #lgballiance, the home of people who know that lesbians are women who love other women, and gay men are men who love other men. On the basis of #SexNotGender. We are here to defend the rights of LGB people. This is a personal struggle for us.

It is personal because of the constant messages we receive asking for our help. Lesbians who write in confusion, having been excluded from LGBTQ+ spaces for being “transphobic”. Gay men who write in sadness that their men-only events are being attacked as “transphobic”.

Messages from teachers, psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, politicians, NHS staff, civil servants, and from all walks of life saying they don’t dare to express their opinion about gender identity for fear of losing their job for supposedly being “transphobic”.

Here are some additional facts about the medicalisation of "gender non-conforming" children. Puberty blockers can be prescribed once a child reaches Tanner Stage 2. This is the first stage of puberty; usually age 9-11 in girls and age 11 in boys. 1/7

The youngest child GIDS has treated with hormone blockers to date was 8 years & 9 months old. Puberty provides a window of development which, if missed, cannot be regained at a later stage. The NHS website asserts: “Little is known about long-term side effects of hormone or 2/7

puberty blockers in children with gender dysphoria". Although Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) advises this is a physically reversible treatment if stopped, it isn't known what psychological effects may be. It’s also not known whether hormone blockers affect the 3/7

We reject Mr Maugham’s assertions about us which are unfounded and bizarre. #LGBAlliance is entirely funded by individual donations; we are a group of LGB people. His assertions remind us of the wild conspiracy theories people used to invent decades ago about gay people./1of2

Then we were all spies and linked to a Communist global threat. Now apparently we’re linked to the far right. We’re neither. We’re a bunch of ordinary LGB people standing up for our rights./2of2

To those who are urging us to sue: We believe that in making these defamatory remarks Mr Maugham is deliberately trying to provoke us into deploying our limited financial and time resources to rebut his claims.

While it is true that 350 trans people have been killed worldwide in the last year not one of those was murdered in Scotland. In the UK there are currently more convicted killers who identify as trans than there have been trans people killed ....in the last decade./3of12

We look on with grave concern at the attempts to shut down liberal values such a free expression. It's a concern to us that the reputation of an important news outlet such as The Guardian has been diminished.

That it has become controversial to defend our rights in law that are predicated on the reality of biological sex only strengthens our resolve.

We believe that current ideas of gender identity are pseudoscientific and present a risk to people who are same-sex attracted.

We believe that there is a need to have a legitimate, respectful, and open discussion about our concerns.

This means that we all have to listen to each other and to expose ourselves to ideas and views that we don't agree with, and that may even make us feel uncomfortable.
