As another week of lockdown passes, we've seen the drop off in cases we'd expect to see, as the number of new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall have nearly halved in the previous seven days – with cases falling everywhere.
A total of 1,266 new cases have been confirmed across the two counties – the lowest since the week ending October 16 – and Friday’s figure of 97 cases is the first ‘double figure’ total since October 2. Cornwall, Plymouth, the South Hams and Torbay see a more than 50% drop.
Friday's figures of 97 are made up of 11 cases in Cornwall, 26 in East Devon, 11 in Exeter, 4 in Mid Devon, 16 in North Devon, 11 in Plymouth, 1 in Teignbridge, 10 in Torbay, 4 in Torridge, 4 in West Devon, and -1 for the South Hams, with no new cases, but one duplicate removed
Government statistics show that 1,266 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 2,367 new cases confirmed last week.
Of the 1,266 new cases confirmed since November 20, 232 were in Cornwall, with 180 in East Devon, 141 in Exeter, 59 in Mid Devon, 104 in North Devon, 231 in Plymouth, 33 in South Hams, 73 in Teignbridge, 119 in Torbay, 51 in Torridge and 43 in West Devon.
This compares to the 2,367 cases confirmed between Nov 14 and 20 of which, 478 were in Cornwall, 244 in East Devon, 220 in Exeter, 79 in Mid Devon, 170 in North Devon, 597 in Plymouth, 89 in the South Hams, 108 in Teignbridge, 263 in Torbay, 66 in Torridge and 53 in West Devon.
Of the 1,266 new cases, 970 had a specimen date between November 20 and 26, with 171 in Cornwall, 152 in East Devon, 101 in Exeter, 40 in Mid Devon, 84 in North Devon, 179 in Plymouth, 25 in South Hams, 62 in Teignbridge, 86 in Torbay, 42 in Torridge and 28 in West Devon.
Charts for East Devon, Exeter, Mid Devon and North Devon
And for South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge and West Devon
And for Cornwall, Plymouth, Torbay, and the Devon County Council area
By specimen date, only Torridge isn’t seeing a fall in cases, although it’s total number of cases are one of the lowest in the region, and although East Devon and Teignbridge had seen a ‘one day spike’ in their rolling averages, they are now falling again as well.
The number of people in hospital in the South West has fallen in the last seven days, now at 938 from 942 last Friday, although there are currently 67 patients in mechanical ventilation beds, up from 65 as of last Friday.
The number of patients in hospital across Devon and Cornwall following a positive Covid-19 test has risen since last week – but only just - and the by Trust figures refer to Tuesday, rather than Friday for the overall South West hospital numbers
While the number of patients in the Royal Devon and Exeter, North Devon and Cornish hospitals has increased, Torbay Hospital has seen a decrease for the second week running, while Derriford Hospital has seen its number drop by more than 40 per cent.
The figures show there were 128 patients in the Royal Devon and Exeter (up from 106), 53 in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth (down from 90), 35 in Torbay Hospital (down from 39), 29 in North Devon District Hospital (up from 18), nine at the Royal Cornwall Hospital (up from six),
six in Cornish Partnership Trust hospitals (up from 4), while 11 beds at Livewell SouthWest facilities in Plymouth (up from 2) and one bed at Devon Partnership Trust facilities (up from 0) were also occupied.
There were 16 patients in Mechanical Ventilation beds, down from 19, with one patient in Torbay Hospital, five at the RD&E and North Devon District Hospital, and ten at Derriford Hospital, with none in Cornwall.
In the last week, there 21 deaths within hospitals in Devon and Cornwall within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 death, with nine in Exeter, two in Torbay, six in Plymouth, three in North Devon, and one in Cornwall.
And while NHS 111 data for Cornwall is slightly up on last week, Devon is down 25 per cent and at the lowest level since August 22, and the R-Rate for the South West fallen to 0.9-1.1 from 1.0-1.3.
In terms of the latest MSOA cluster maps, that cover the period of specimen dates between November 16 and November 22, Callington and Pensilva (21), Bodmin East (20), Wonford and St Loye’s (20), and Barnstaple Sticklepath (20) are the only four areas with a cluster of 20 or more
This compares to 29 areas last week. Ottery St Mary and West Hill (17), Cullompton (15), Efford, Laira & Crabtree (18), Ivybridge (7), Starcross and Exminster (12), Higher Brixham and Preston and Shorton (18), Hartland Coast (11) and Okehampton (10) are the other 'worst hit'
The hope and expectation would be that cases will continue to fall next week as well, given we will still be in lockdown, and probably the following week as well, as while in Tier system, the lag means most infections will be from pre-lockdown
The impact of the Tier system probably won't be seen until December 10/11 at the earliest in terms of new cases being confirmed, while the impact of the lockdown is only just started to be seen in terms of hospitalisations and deaths
Usual caveats around only confirmed cases etc being included, but the ONS estimates appear to show a decrease in the South West as well, so all the metrics for cases are moving in the right direction.

Covid cases halve in a week across Devon and Cornwall

devonlive.com/news/devon-new…
Saturday's figures show 203 new cases across Devon and Cornwall, slightly higher than last week and recent days, but skewed by a lot of backdating of cases in North Devon and Torridge, and pretty much everywhere else is still seeing cases fall
17 new cases in Cornwall (11 from Nov 26, 6 from Nov 25), 22 in East Devon (17 from Nov 26, 5 from Nov 25), 19 in Exeter (12 from Nov 26, 7 from Nov 25), 7 in Mid Devon (6 from Nov 26, 1 from Nov 25), 30 in Plymouth (24 from Nov 26, 3 from Nov 24 and 25), 2 in West Devon (Nov 26)
5 in South Hams (4 from Nov 26, 1 from Nov 25), 5 in Teignbridge (4 from Nov 26, 1 from Nov 25), 17 in Torbay (12 from Nov 26, 2 from Nov 25, 3 from Nov 24). And then 39 in North Devon (7 from Nov 26, 9 from Nov 25, 3 from Nov 24 and 23, 2 from Nov 22, 21, 17 and 13.....
1 from Nov 16, and 8 'historic cases), and 40 in Torridge (10 from Nov 26, 8 from Nov 25, 3 from Nov 22 and 18, 2 from Nov 19, 1 from Nov 24, 20, 17 and 15, and 10 historic cases). South West hospital figures fall from 938 to 903.

All of Devon placed in Tier 2 - what it means - I've put in messages to all the MPs to see what their reaction is and whether they'll be voting for the measures

devonlive.com/news/devon-new…
Why Devon is in Tier 2 - Case rates are 121/100,000 overall though there are higher rates in Plymouth, Torbay and Exeter. The case rate in the over 60s is 85/100,000 though significantly higher in Exeter (155.9/100,000). Positivity is 4.2%. There is pressure at the RDE Hospital.
Response from @garystreeterSWD - "I see that only the Isle of Wight, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are in tier 1 so we must accept tier 2 for Devon and Plymouth. Our rates are continuing to fall and there will be a review before Christmas and I will continue to push...

Two weeks into Lockdown 2, and the highest number of weekly coronavirus cases confirmed in the last seven days across Devon and Cornwall has been recorded – but most areas are now seeing cases fall (and this week includes the weird Saturday where everything was double)
More than 2,000 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the last seven days across the two counties, taking the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 15,982.
Cases has risen everywhere, except for Torbay and West Devon, but when looking at cases by specimen date rather than reported date, only North Devon is seeing a rise - with five areas seeing a flat trend, and five areas seeing cases drop

It's Friday afternoon, and here's the weekly look back at the coronavirus figures across Devon and Cornwall, and cases have risen across the two counties (although only just in some places), but for the second week in a row, have fallen in Exeter
The total confirmed number of cases has today hit 10,000 across the two counties. It only crossed the 9,000 mark on Monday, with Friday's figures seeing 292 new cases. Plymouth’s figures rose over the 2,000 mark today. It hit 1,000 on October 5.
Government statistics show that 1,662 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 1,395 new cases confirmed last week.

The number of new cases confirmed in Cornwall has fallen, going from 179 to 132 in the latest seven days, while Plymouth has seen cases more than half, dropping from 74 to 36.

There seems to be some confusion around the confirmation yesterday from Cornwall Council that 170 new cases were confirmed at the Pilgrim’s Pride food factory in Pool - as far as I know, these are not 'new cases' but the total of ones already reported
Since the first announcement about the outbreak, there have been 284 cases confirmed across the whole of Cornwall - the vast majority of which have been in and around the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area where there are currently eight areas where clusters of cases confirmed
The 170 new cases confirmed headline is scary, but also wrong. The 170 cases is the total linked to the factory in the last 2 weeks, and virtually all have already been accounted for in the figures that are provided daily, so there won't be a massive spike of 170 new cases

EXCLUSIVE - University of Exeter students living within the city are being asked not to meet indoors with anyone not part of their households for the next fortnight.
More than half of the cases confirmed in the previous week across Exeter are attributable to the University – mainly from students unwittingly arriving having already been infected elsewhere in the country and passing it onto the housemates.
The University, following discussions with Public Health England, Devon County Council and Exeter City Council, is asking students to take the additional measures to avoid further local restrictions, of the type already seen in a number of other universities.
