#wmata GM has proposed $279M in cuts to service in part to close the $494.5M budget gap.
$160M is proposed to come from operating maintenance expenses to the capital budget. "Unsustainable approach" says the presentation
#wmata is now budgeting assuming the $150M/yr fed match (PRIIA funding) isn't reauthorized, which leaves a different $750M hole in the agency's capital budget.
#wmata says its FY22 budget, beginning July 1, faces a $494.5M deficit. Ridership expected to recover to 34% of pre-pandemic levels, but that's it.
Bus/Rail/Access will cost $1.681B, and Metro assumes it can rely on a subsidy of $1.186B from local/state/fed partners.
This budget proposal would be disastrous for #wmata, both bus and rail. Metro's allocation of federal CARES act funding is running out and no add'l has been approved by Congress.
Eye-opening now looking @ Jan/Feb ridership *increases* just 9, months ago pre-pandemic.
While #wmata seeks to cut nearly $500M from its operating budget, its 6-year $12.4B capital budget remains nearly untouched. It was just a few years ago mismanagement meant parts of the agency's $1B/yr capital budget was going unspent. Now, proposal to run trains only every 30min
#wmata does not say which 19 stations they would close as part of their proposed FY22 budget, but I've been reminded 19 stations (potentially the same? who knows!) were closed earlier on in the pandemic: wmata.com/about/news/COV…
#wmata expects to adopt its FY22 budget sometime during March. If we get movement in Congress for money for transit agencies, the cuts in the budget could potentially get rolled back. But obviously I can't predict the future so who knows what'll happen.
If there hadn't been a pandemic, #wmata rail ridership was on track to be ~7-9% higher this year than last. wmata.com/initiatives/ri…
The proposed FY22 #wmata budget features front & center on today's @730_DC
This would be v good for #wmata, if it ends up happening (obviously that's far from sure)
"It also includes $40 billion to assist hard-hit transit agencies..."
Metro doesn't have switches outside court house, but it does have some at Rosslyn. #wmata ATC personnel are manually setting the outbound switch @ Rosslyn to keep trains moving.
Orange/Silver/Blue line trains are delayed in both directions due to this signal issue. Switches @ both Rosslyn and Clarendon are clamped, slowing trains down. Court House is also being bypassed due to the power outage causing all of this.
Single-tracking between Pentagon City and Braddock Road continues. All trains on the DC-bound track. Some trains will skip some stations in the single-tracking area if there's another train behind. #wmata is still investigating the underlying track circuit issue(s).
Orange/Silver/Blue line delays due to a signal problem @ Federal Center SW. Delays both directions. #wmata
Trains are still stopped at both directions @ Federal Center. Two train operators need to leave their trains and go down to the tracks to secure switches before trains can move again. It'll take a few more minutes.
