(Kerala Journalist Siddique Kappan's case)

#SupremeCourt bench led by CJI SA Bobde to shortly hear plea by a scribe association urging the top court to order release of Kerala Journalist Siddique Kappan who was arrested by @Uppolice while he was on way to cover #HathrasCase
KUWJ has informed the Supreme Court that Kappan was beaten up in jail and that he was denied sleep & access to family. Says guidelines of the DK Basu case were violated.

Sibal: FIR does not implicate me and charges are levelled
Sibal: Does the SG Mehta has a special privilege to interrupt me. The fir is false. The website they refer does not exist.

CJI: this is a criminal matter. Even if accused comes here then also we ask them to approach HC
Sibal: in other petitions where habeas corpus was filed before HC, dates have been given of next month. Now we will asked to go to trial court

CJI: Can an association agitate an issue like this on behalf of journalist

Sibal: I will implead the wife
CJI: we will again ask you why don't you go to the HC

SIBAL: In Arnab Goswamis case bail was pending in lower court and still this Court entertained it

CJi: Every case is different

SG: he claimed to work for Tejas which was closed in 2018
Sibal: Please don't list it after 2 weeks. This is about liberty.

SG: Investigation till now is shocking

Sibal: numbers of relatives have been given who do not exist and have no relation to #SiddiqueKappan
Matter to be listed next week.

SG Mehta: We will file a rejoinder. I will satisfy your conscience.

The Kerala High Court will shortly hear a bail application moved by former Kerala bureaucrat M. Sivasankar in connection to his alleged role and arrest in the #keralagoldsmugglingcase

He moved the Kerala High Court on November 20 seeking regular bail.

He had earlier moved the Kerala High Court seeking pre-arrest bail apprehending arrest in investigations conducted by the Customs Department and the ED.

Within an hour of the Kerala High Court dismissing his pre-arrest bail plea, he was arrested by the ED and taken into custody.

His subsequent bail plea before an Ernakulam PMLA Court was junked.

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde hears an application for permission to fell thousands of trees.

CJI: PWD assures that they will compensate by planting the same trees in another area so that there is no loss to environment in general

CJI: not possible for us to accept a compensation in merely arithmetical terms especially when there is no statement forthcoming from Uttar Pradesh or PWD as to nature of trees that is to say they are classified as shrubs or large trees

Dr AM Singhvi for Vedanta- wastage of national resource can be stopped by allowing short 3 month run of the plant. I'm not arguing on merits
There is a preconceived decision to not allow the plant to run
Justice Nariman- you've had this plea for short runs for 2 years.

@DrAMSinghvi- the short run would allow us to identify any issues still remaining. The plant started in 1997. Provides direct employment to 4000 people, indirect employment to about 20,000.
Singhvi: Trickle down dependants are more than 2 lakh. Supplying 36% of the country's copper needs. Now India is becoming dependant on Copper imports.

NEERI had made environment impact report and gave 30 recommendations. Compliance of 29 out of 30
