We salute the MPs who support the Equality Act Review Campaign: all are champions of human rights, determined to make society a better place for the vulnerable. They want to improve the protections in the Equality Act based on an expanded range of factors:/1of8
These factors include homelessness, low socio-economic status and/or poverty, caste, & immigration status. We believe these are wholly well-intentioned proposals that deserve serious consideration. There is a problem, however. Among these ideas is one of a very different kind:/2of8
the campaign proposes “joining ‘sex’ and ‘gender reassignment’ to be one protected characteristic using gender neutral language.” “What’s wrong with that?” you ask. Isn’t gender-neutral language fairer? What would the “gender-neutral” term be? Gender identity?/3of8
This innocent-looking proposal would have the effect of eliminating existing rights. It would remove the category “sex” from the Equality Act. That would remove the EqA’s specific protections for women and girls – that is, people born female./4of8
Moreover, and importantly for us as an LGB organisation, it would also make the protected characteristic “sexual orientation” meaningless. For if sex is not retained as a distinct category, “same-sex attraction” cannot be defined. This must not be allowed to happen./5of8
Embedding this regressive proposal along with other – progressive – proposals aimed at helping disadvantaged groups is a tactic best described by James Kirkup in his incisive article spectator.co.uk/article/the-do… /6of8
We urge all MPs to firmly reject this proposal, and to preserve the Equality Act’s protections of the rights of LGB people, women and girls. We will happily meet with any of you to answer your questions on these issues./7of8
We salute the bravery of #KeiraBell & Mrs A in bringing the case. We applaud years of hard work & high level research by Stephanie Davies-Arai @Transgendertrd. The importance of that work was recognised by @JudiciaryUK when TT were permitted to make an intervention at court 1/9
We quote: "The court granted Transgender Trend permission to intervene on the basis that we had introduced new evidence that was potentially relevant to the case. The submissions from both @stonewalluk & @Mermaids_Gender were judged on exactly the same grounds", 2/9
"and they were refused permission on the basis that they had either repeated evidence already before the court in witness statements, or that the evidence they submitted was irrelevant to the case". 3/9
More than 100,000 people are living with HIV in the UK. It's not a death sentence and if you're undetectable it's untransmittable. We stand with all LGB people living with HIV, against stigma and misunderstanding. #WorldAIDSDay#UequalsU#CantPassItOn /1of4
Each of us will mark #WorldAIDSDay in our own way, whether that's fundraising, awareness raising, remembering loved ones we've lost, or treasuring loved ones who are living with HIV. #UequalsU#CantPassItOn /2of4
We've come a long way, but there is still work to do in breaking down stigma about HIV, in further developing treatments, and hopefully some day finding a vaccine or cure. #WorldAIDSDay /3of4
Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) is in a bit of a muddle. Govt guidelines state schools shouldn’t work with organisations that produce material suggesting non-conformity to gender stereotypes is synonymous with having a different “gender identity”./1of4 uncancelled.co.uk/uk-news/as-sch…
Yet many providers of materials or training suggest just that, while continuing to receive Govt funding. “Some parents will want to ask ... why organisations that are breaching guidelines issued by one part of government are receiving funding from other parts of government.”/2of4
A spokesperson for the Dept of Education says Ofsted will enforce compliance with its guidance. Meanwhile “schools should consult parents and share examples of the RSE resource they intend to use.” /3of4
“I was actually at the inaugural meeting of the LGB Alliance last year. Far from promoting hate, the agenda was focused on how to organise as same-sex-attracted people. There were transexual people at the meeting,”/1of4 spiked-online.com/2020/11/30/the…
“and I can confirm that none of them spontaneously combusted upon entering the room, despite being exposed to a plurality of viewpoints. Ten years ago, nothing the LGB Alliance says would have been deemed controversial.”/2of4
“For the crime of offering an alternative to transgender ideology and for defending the importance of biological sex in homosexuality, the LGB Alliance has been hounded and smeared across the media.”/3of4
We had a spike in donations as a result of all the attention we've received so we would just like the thank all of you who have contributed, it's very much appreciated. 🙏
Our second Gay Spot (link below) saw a rise in people viewing, and was an informative and good-natured discussion about how the idea of gender identity negatively impacts same-sex attracted men (and women).
The next one is planned for January.
