Please mourn the dead, support their loved ones and caregivers, and help stop the spread!
On a day when 84 deaths are reported, Iowa reports hospitalizations for coronavirus were down 124 to 1,000, including 209 in intensive care (down 15) and 128 on ventilators (down 3).
There were 123 new admissions to Iowa hospitals for coronavirus in the last 24-hour period.
Iowa reports there are now 135 long-term care outbreaks.
Iowa also reports there have been 1,096 deaths of long-term care residents.
See the image I just took from the state's coronavirus website:
Yesterday at approximately 10:50 am I grabbed this image of the long-term care data at the state's coronavirus website.
I suspect the state made a mistake or has changed how it is reporting long-term care outbreaks because today's data shows 35 fewer outbreaks and 1 less death.
Between 10 am Dec. 3 and 10 am Dec. 4, Iowa reported 2,901 new cases of coronavirus, up from 236,792 to 239,693.
Of the 2,901 new cases, there were 366 new cases for Iowa kids under age 18 for a total of 23,960.
That's up from 11,305 on Halloween and 4,538 on September 1.
Subtracting deaths (2,603) and "recoveries" (152,331) from total cases (239,693), there are 84,759 active cases of coronavirus in Iowa - or one out of every 38 Iowans.
That's down slightly, but as recently as October 7, we were under 20,000 active cases (19,691).
Here's another way to think about 2,901 new cases.
So far, coronavirus has killed 2,603 Iowans while 152,331 have "recovered." That's a ratio of 1.68 deaths for every 100 cases where an outcome has been determined.
Applying that rate to the 2,901 new cases, over 47 would die.
The 2,901 new cases were confirmed on 7,588 reported tests (from 1,229,582 to 1,237,170) for a rate of 38.2%.
The state has changed how it reports its "positive case analysis." When I looked quickly this morning, I didn't see a report on the daily positive rate for new tests.
There are 77 counties where Gov. Reynolds loosened Iowa's limited coronavirus restrictions May 1, without an alternative safety plan.
On April 30, they had 559 total cases and 11 total deaths.
Today, they had 1,463 new cases (total 103,303) and 42 more deaths (total 1,146).
Biggest case increases in the 77 counties (new cases, total cases, new tests reported, % is new cases divided by tests reported - state has acknowledged not reporting all tests):

Iowa reports 17 more coronavirus deaths and 1,869 new coronavirus cases.
The 17 deaths are the second highest reported on a Sunday, and the 307 deaths reported since last Sunday (Nov. 29-Dec. 6) are highest for a 7-day period yet.
The 17 coronavirus deaths reported in Iowa today were in Black Hawk (3), Bremer, Butler, Floyd, Johnson, Keokuk, Linn, Marion, Polk, Pottawattamie (5), and Webster Counties.
Please speak up with Gov. Reynolds and legislators to do more to slow the spread of coronavirus and save lives.
Since the Republican majority adjourned the Iowa Legislature on June 14, over 2,000 Iowans have now died from this infectious disease (2,682 total now vs. 651 then).
Iowa Senate Republican Leader Jack Whitver writes: "it is impossible to legislate away the pandemic."
What a defeatist! With that attitude, no wonder over 2,000 Iowans have now died from coronavirus since the Republican majority adjourned June 14. (1/4)
Good public policy and leadership can stop or reduce the spread and save lives.
New Zealand has 5 coronavirus deaths per million people. Norway (like Iowa, not an island) has 65 deaths per million. In Iowa, it's 850 per million, more than 1 out of every 1,200 Iowans! (2/4)
Our neighbor to the north, Minnesota, which has higher population density, has fewer deaths than Iowa per million people. Minnesota has 706 deaths per million.
If Iowa had Minnesota's fatality rate, we would have 446 more Iowans alive today. (3/4)
Earlier today, I shared the statewide coronavirus toll Iowa reported for the 24-hour period from Dec. 4 at 10 am to Dec. 5 at 10 am, including 62 deaths (2,665 total) and 2,369 new confirmed cases (82,369 currently active).
