Dec. 6, 2020 (2nd Sunday Advent)

Iowa reports 17 more coronavirus deaths and 1,869 new coronavirus cases.

The 17 deaths are the second highest reported on a Sunday, and the 307 deaths reported since last Sunday (Nov. 29-Dec. 6) are highest for a 7-day period yet.

#IowaMourns
The 17 coronavirus deaths reported in Iowa today were in Black Hawk (3), Bremer, Butler, Floyd, Johnson, Keokuk, Linn, Marion, Polk, Pottawattamie (5), and Webster Counties.

All across Iowa.

Please speak up with Gov. Reynolds and legislators to do more to slow the spread of coronavirus and save lives.

Since the Republican majority adjourned the Iowa Legislature on June 14, over 2,000 Iowans have now died from this infectious disease (2,682 total now vs. 651 then).
In addition to the 17 deaths, Iowa reports that hospitalizations dropped by 42 to 918, including 195 in intensive care (down 9) and 122 on ventilators (up 5).

There were 141 new admissions to Iowa hospitals for coronavirus in the last 24-hour reporting period.
As of 10 am this morning, Iowa reported there were 137 long-term care outbreaks in the state (no change).

Sadly, Iowa also reported there were 4 more deaths of long-term care residents for a total of 1,118.

#IowaMourns
Between 10 am Dec. 5 and 10 am Dec. 6, there were 1,869 new confirmed cases of coronavirus reported in Iowa, for a total of 243,931 (up from 242,062).

Subtracting deaths (2,682) and "recoveries" (158,994), there are now 82,255 active cases - or one out of every 39 Iowans!
The 1,869 new coronavirus cases include 264 Iowa kids under age 18 for a total of 24,519 (up from 24,255).

On the morning of Halloween, that was 11,305.

On September 1, that was 4,538.

This jeopardizes the kids' health as well as their families, friends, staff, and public.
The current fatality-case rate is 1.66% (2,682 deaths out of 161,676 cases that have either died or "recovered").

Applying that rate to the 1,869 new cases reported today would result in another 31 deaths.
Since the start of November, Iowa has reported 967 deaths in 36 days. That's 26.9 deaths per day.

This is significantly more than the two historic leading causes of deaths in Iowa - heart disease (19.7 deaths per day) and cancer (17.7 deaths per day).

#IowaMourns
The 1,869 new cases were confirmed on 5,408 new reported tests (up from 1,243,591 to 1,248,999) for a rate of 34.6%, comparing county spreadsheet available at 10 am with spreadsheet on Dec. 5 at 10 am.

That's the second lowest since Nov. 1 (only Nov. 23 was lower at 33.1%).
Yesterday, I began tracking the state's new "total tests" display under "positive case analysis."

Dec. 5: 261,732 total positives, 2,561,174 total tests
Dec. 6: 263,728 total positives, 2,580,038 total tests

Difference: 1,996 new positives divided by 18,864 new tests = 10.6%.
Unfortunately, the state is not providing the daily changes on a county-by-county basis, at least in any accessible format that I have been able to find.

Nor does the state explain why its new positive cases and new total tests are so much higher than the county spreadsheets.
What is clear is that the state has not been reporting all tests in the county spreadsheets, and it appears it hasn't been counting some positive tests, either.

The state continues to need more transparency!
Don't let the data discrepancies frustrate you or obscure the fact that coronavirus is a deadly infectious disease that has now killed over 2,600 Iowans.

We have had public health successes in the past, and we can slow down and stop the spread of this infectious disease, too.
I am introducing a new measure today: number of new cases per 10,000 residents.

For the state as a whole, that number today was 5.9, based on the fact that Iowa added 1,869 cases with a population of 3,155,000.

Now for the county-by-county data . . .
I start with 77 counties where Gov. Reynolds loosened Iowa's limited coronavirus restrictions May 1, without an alternative safety plan.

On April 30, they had 559 total cases and 11 total deaths.

Today, they had 787 new cases (total 105,238) and 10 more deaths (total 1,200).
Biggest case increases in the 77 counties (new cases, total cases, new tests reported, % is new cases divided by tests reported on state's spreadsheets, number of new cases per 10,000 people - please note the county spreadsheets provided by the state do not include all tests):

Iowa Senate Republican Leader Jack Whitver writes: "it is impossible to legislate away the pandemic."

What a defeatist! With that attitude, no wonder over 2,000 Iowans have now died from coronavirus since the Republican majority adjourned June 14. (1/4)

thegazette.com/subject/opinio…
Good public policy and leadership can stop or reduce the spread and save lives.

New Zealand has 5 coronavirus deaths per million people. Norway (like Iowa, not an island) has 65 deaths per million. In Iowa, it's 850 per million, more than 1 out of every 1,200 Iowans! (2/4)
Our neighbor to the north, Minnesota, which has higher population density, has fewer deaths than Iowa per million people. Minnesota has 706 deaths per million.

If Iowa had Minnesota's fatality rate, we would have 446 more Iowans alive today. (3/4)
