Let's do a quick Friday recap of three important #AWS database launches & previews from earlier this week -- Babelfish, AWS Glue Elastic Views, and Aurora Serverless v2....
Babelfish for Aurora PostgreSQL is a SQL Server-compatible end-point for PostgreSQL so you can easily migrate from SQL Server to Aurora. It understands T-SQL and speaks the TDS protocol, and will be released under the Apache 2.0 license!
AWS Glue Elastic Views lets you build materialized views that combine & replicate data from multiple data stores without writing custom code. The preview supports DynamoDB, S3, Redshift, and Amazon Elasticsearch Service & more in the works.
Aurora Serverless v2 (also preview) scales instantly to handle hundreds of thousands of TPS, and can save you 90% of database cost compared to provisioning for peak load. Also supports Multi-AZ, Global Database, and read replicas.
I know that most of you follow me because of what I share about AWS. I do try to aim for a mix of 80% work and 20% other, and this tweet thread is going to be the latter. I have no idea where it will go, but I need to say something. (1/21)
The events of the last couple of weeks have shaken me to my core. In times like these we are supposed to be able to look to our leaders for some reassurance and some guidance, but that's not going to happen. We need to change. (2/21)
I was raised with little awareness of race, too little in retrospect. We lived in a suburb of Boston, a place where children from the inner city were bused. This was highly controversial at the time but no one talked about it. (3/21)
I've been heads-down on final #AWS re:Invent blogging, and need to catch up on all of the posts from the last couple of days. Unroll this thread to see them all..
My newest LEGO project - a Launch Utility Tower (LUT), scaled to match the popular LEGO Saturn V set. The tower was designed by a super-fan and is made up of about 8500 pieces!
I spent 1.5 months getting parts from my collection and ordering many more, and then organized them all in a recently-vacated basement room:
After just a few steps the base begins to take shape:
Late last month we launched a very helpful self-service management feature for Amazon WorkSpaces. Users can change their running mode, compute type, and disk size. They can also rebuild their WorkSpace. The feature is accessible from two locations. First, before signing in:
A very nice update to Amazon Rekognition: improved face detection, analysis, and recognition capabilities in challenging conditions. Detect 40% more faces, match faces with 30% better accuracy, and get improved attributes (age, gender, emotion).
