Good morning from Georgia - and the 1st day of early voting 🗳

This is the line at the Cobb County Elections Main Office.

Several voters near the front told me they arrived before doors opened and have been waiting nearly 2 hours.

MORE from Marietta: during 1st day of early voting for the general election, some people waited as long as 10 hours at this location.

That was a sunny (hot) day in GA.

Today, it’s rained throughout the AM, temps in the 40s and getting colder.

Definitely a mix of voters here in Marietta, GA

One man (Loeffler/Perdue supporter) tells me he usually votes absentee, but came in person bc he “doesn’t trust the process” anymore.

Says he takes POTUS words w/ a grain of salt, but does “have his doubts” about absentee (Cont’d)

Another couple (supporting Ossoff/Perdue) said they were not at all deterred by cold weather/rain this AM.

They tell me they waited an hour+ to cast their ballot.

They consider the runoffs an extension of the presidential election “and just as important”

NEWS: the Trump campaign has officially filed a petition for a recount in Georgia.

MORE: the campaign is legally entitled to request one, but a few notes:

Before certifying, Georgia did an audit (state law required) which amounted to hand recount of all 5million ballots.

GA officials hoped "common sense would prevail," satisfy everyone results are valid (1/2)

The recount process will be a machine scan of each ballot (not a signature match, as the campaign has requested).

As for cost - each county will have to pay for the manpower required to scan the ballots. (2/2)

Now the clock is on: the Trump campaign has TWO business days to request a recount in Georgia.

That week, I asked @GabrielSterling about the Trump campaign potentially requesting a Georgia recount. His response:

“My personal hope...is that common sense would prevail.

That they’d say, look - you’ve already had a hand recount and nothing changed. Let’s not do that.”

1st day of Georgia early voting. This is one Atlanta (Fulton County) precinct.

I talked to a dozen people near the front of the line. They’d all been waiting nearly 4 hours to vote. #GAvotes #GApol

Every voter I spoke with told me two things:

-they came prepared for long lines w/ snacks, chairs, umbrellas (some even expected the wait bc of holiday)

-they will not leave until they cast their ballot

As one woman told me: “We’re voting for our lives” #Georgia #vote

These non-partisan volunteers spent hours handing out water + snacks to people in line.

They call themselves “line warmers.”

“We just want to make people feel more comfortable participating in our democracy”

BREAKING: DA has decided to issue warrants in #RayshardBrooks case.

Says one officer kicked Brooks as he lay on the ground. The other “stood on Mr. Brooks shoulder while he was struggling for his life”

CHARGES: Former officer Garrett Rolfe facing 11 charges, including felony murder.

DA says could bring penalty of life w/out parole or death penalty. #RayshardBrooks
