NEW: London hospitals forced to cancel operations to free up staffing as critical care beds fill up independent.co.uk/news/health/co… #COVID19
On Wednesday, there were a total of 2,289 coronavirus patients in London hospitals, an increase of two per cent on the day before.

But the numbers of coronavirus patients in critical care beds jumped 8.6 per cent in a single day.
London has seen the largest increase in Covid cases in the last week with infection rates reaching 319 per 100,000 people, compared to just under 200 in the previous week.
This graph from the NHS briefing for London shows the sharp rise in hospital admissions - it will only get worse in next few weeks and Christmas relaxation could accelerate it even more:

NHS safety guidance ‘too long to read’ say hospital staff as safety watchdog exposes systemic risks of misplaced nasogastric tubes: independent.co.uk/news/health/pa… #patientsafety
I have often wondered what value the reams of guidance in hospitals actually adds to #patientsafety Is it more about assurance? Staff have no time to keep abreast of changes? And too often guidance isn't up to date anyway?
The irony is of course, the @hsib_org report itself, will probably go unread by many. But you can find it here: hsib.org.uk/investigations…

Doctors at Shrewsbury hospital led the way in pursuing 'normal birth at almost any cost' says inquiry chief: independent.co.uk/news/health/sh…
My story from last week's damning report here:
.@GillWaltonRCM tells @CommonsHealth "It's really important all the teams work together with women at the centre of care and they don't promote one type of birth over another.”

Worth noting the RCM has in the past been on the wrong side of this issue - good to see clear msg!

Unlawful do-not-resuscitate orders may still be in place, regulator warns independent.co.uk/news/health/co…
Can there be any excuse for some of these DNACPR uses?
.@katemasters67 who threatened @MattHancock with a judicial review earlier this year told @Independent "This is not a new issue...The government need to listen to the CQC and take some action or we will just be going round in circles.”

Pfizer covid vaccine authorised for use in UK next week, in world first independent.co.uk/news/uk/politi…
The govt says the @MHRAgovuk has done a "thorough analysis" of the data on the vaccine by its experts "who have concluded that the vaccine has met strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness".
We still dont have published trial results for this vaccine. I hope @MHRAgovuk and @DHSCgovuk publish as much info as possible. A press release isn't good enough.

Exclusive: Hospitals have been banned from launching their own coronavirus testing for staff and patients: independent.co.uk/news/health/co…
Leaked documents show the @DHSCgovuk has now imposed a cap on the level of funding to pay for Covid testing in the NHS.

In short hospitals who do their own testing without approval of the Test and Trace service wont get paid.
Staggering at a time when Test and Trace cannot meet national demand for testing and some hospitals say they can do their own local testing and have staff stuck at home unable to get tests
